patches killed my PPP connection

Post by Jordan Dimitro » Tue, 19 Feb 2002 03:07:49

Hi there,

I had a terrible problem with the latest recommended patches for Solaris
8 x86_Recommended Patch Cluster from Feb/04/02. When I applied the
cluster, I lost any connectivity through the ppp to the Internet. See
the attached extract from the log file:

13:16:07 Link manager (1075) started 02/17/02
13:16:07 parse_config_file: Successful configuration
13:16:07 process_ipd_msg: ipdptp0 needs connection
conn(dmuppp)
Trying entry from '/etc/uucp/Systems' - device type ACU.
Device Type ACU wanted
Trying device entry 'cua/a' from '/etc/uucp/Devices'.
processdev: calling setdevcfg(ppp, ACU)
fd_mklock: ok
fixline(9, 115200)
gdial(hayes) called
Trying caller script 'hayes' from '/etc/uucp/Dialers'.
expect: ("")
got it
expect: ("")

expect: ("")

sendthem (ATZ^M^M)
expect: (OK)
^MATZ^M^M^JOKgot it
sendthem (ATDT2577022^M<NO CR>)
expect: (CONNECT)

getto ret 9
call cleanup(0)
13:17:15 Link manager (1075) exited 02/17/02

What it seems to me to have happened is that the aspppd does not start
the ip layer after the ppp authentication. For some reason it just
keeps waiting and the ip link is never established.

After backing all patches from the cluster out, I restored the ppp
connectivity, i.e. the ppp scripts should be correct. It looks to me
that there must be a bug somewhere in the patches. Has anybody had
that sort of problems with this cluster?

Thanks,

patches killed my PPP connection

Hi
Yes it appears those nice people at Sun have stopped supporting asppp.
You will have to download Solstice PPP (for free) from the software
companion software.
Use pppinit to create the initial file.
If you use chap then comment out every line of the script.
use pppconn to make the connection.
/etc/init.d/ppp start/stop or just kill to control the pppd.

                Regards Conwyn

If you mean Solstice PPP 3.something then yes, you could do that, but
personally I found it pretty underwhelming -- the GUI etc seemed pretty
feeble.

What I like a lot more is Solaris PPP 4.0 (basically ANU pppd 2.4.something).

This is included in Solaris 8 07/01, 10/01 and so on -- and "included" means
that it installs from the official Solaris CDs (1 of 2 or 2 of 2, I forget),
lives in /usr, and is generally a full-fledged part of Solaris.  *This* is
the reason that they're now killing off aspppd (and good riddance to it).

One note (per my post a couple of days ago):  make sure to use the "novj"
option until the bug in VJ header compression gets fixed.

This is a known problem, and isn't really an issue with asppp itself;
the poll(2) interface was broken in patch 108528-11.  This is covered
by bugid 4626999.

I'm not certain of the status of this bug, other than that it was
fixed for Solaris 9.  I don't support the older Solaris PPP
implementations, so you'll need to talk with technical support to get
an updated patch.

1. ppp -auto ... close the connection without killing ppp

Currently I'm using ppp in -auto mode .. so when a user needs a
connection, it dials. The timeout is set for 3 minutes.

Okay, we're cheap around here and have only one phone line. If someone
needs the phone "right now," is there a nice way to close the connection
without killing ppp?

Thanks, in advance.
