probe-scsi not responding to IBM scsi drive

I am trying to add an IBM 1 gig scsi drive to a Sparc10 (replacing a bad
seagate drive) and probe-scsi does not recognize it. I have tried it with and
without termination, different scsi addresses, with and without a second drive.
Probe-scsi does recgonize a second seagate drive in the Sparc10 but only if the
IBM scsi is not installed.
The vender claims the IBM is fine and probes on their sparc10.

Any ideas?

1. probe-scsi and connecting a DAT drive

I am running Solaris 2.2 on a SparcStation LX and am trying
to connect an old PD DAT drive to it. When I connected it,
(daisy-chained from the cdrom scsi port and doing a boot -r)
I could not seem to access the drive. I then shutdown and
tried to probe-scsi and got no response and the machine hung.
The scsi addresses are corrrect and the cables are good and
the DAT drive is terminated. I disconnected the DAT drive
and tried to probe-scsi on the cdrom which is working fine
and the same thing happened (the cdrom is a SUN and is not
terminated - atleast not with an external terminator).
The DAT drive was working fine on a SUN 3/60.

My questions are:

What does the machine hanging on probe-scsi mean?

What should I try next to get this drive connected?

Should a generic DAT driver work (it did in SunOS 4.1.1)?

Any help is appreciated.
