Solaris 2.5 x86 cannot boot

Solaris 2.5 x86 cannot boot

Post by Keith K » Tue, 06 Feb 1996 04:00:00

Hi:
Has anyone experience a problem like not being able to proceed beyond the
rotating cursor during a 2.5 installation? I can boot up the previous
Solaris 2.4 cd but not 2.5. I wonder if anyone has the same experience
because I suspect that the cd may be bad.

Thanks
Keith

I was trying to install Solaris 2.5 x86 on a Pentium PCI machine with a new
Adaptec 2940 PCI Host bus adapter.  The install halted at the rotating cursor
with the following error message:

       Booting kernel/unix...
       SunOS Release 5.5 ...
       Copyright...

       (Can't load the root filesystem)
       Type any key to continue

You don't mention what kind of hardware you are using but, if it is a new
Adaptec 2940 PCI host bus Adapter for your CD-rom, then read on.

I found the following information at access.1.Sun.Com in a postscript
document dated January 1996, "Solaris 2.5 x86 Driver Update 1 Guide":

Note - The new Adaptec AHA-2940U and AHA-2940UW adapters which use
the new AIC-7880 controller chip will not work with the existing
Solaris adp device driver.  Only the older adapters which use the
AIC-787x or AIC-7850 controller chips are supported by the existing
adp driver.  An updated adp driver to support these new adapters
will be released as soon as is possible.

I have also had the same type of problem booting solaris x86 2.4 on a pentium
PCI system with an Adaptec 2940 card.  I fixed this by contacting Sun and
getting the latest release on their boot disk (Version 8 I think) this can also
be downloaded from the Sun home page area.

I have the same problem with my BusLogic 946C. Called up SunSoft and
they said I had to wait for the next driver update.

Thanks

1. FS: Solaris 2.5 Desktop (CDE) and/or Solaris 2.5 Server Packages for x86 desktops

 Hi All,

Just wanted to pass on some excellent deals on Solaris 2.5.1 software with
the WABI user interface for x86 machines. The WABI allows you to run many
Windows 3.1 applications on a UNIX box, giving you the best of both worlds.
Imagine, running MS OFFICE components like, MS Word for Windows, Excel,
Powerpoint, and interfacing with the functionality of UNIX at the same time.

For a limited time, John Cristy, at Executive Tools, Inc.,
is offering:

Solaris 2.5.1 User Desktop package for $175.00
Solaris 2.5.1 Application Server package for $395.00

Ref URL http://www.etools.com for full information and additional products.

They also have a student special (99.00 + shipping)(yes, you read that
right, Solaris 2.5.1 user desktop for $99.00).

Mention my name, Bob Fahey, and he will throw in the Java Workshop for
$85.00. Mention my name anyway, as he wants to know what the response is to
this.
If asked where you heard this, tell them not just the web, but the Newsgroup
you read it on.  Thanks.

The Executive Tools web site URL http://www.etools.com also has some
excellent links to other Solaris and Sun information pages.

Executive Tools is not associated with this posting, so, if you have any

 replies, good or bad!
