Looking for the elusive Sun 4/260 SunOS boot tapes.....

Post by Robert D. Key » Fri, 12 Mar 1999 04:00:00

I have a perfectly fine, albeit rather dinosaur, Sun 4/260 SPARC crate
(anyone remember the old 12 slot vme monsters.....(:+}}.....), which
is in fine shape for its advanced age, but, my boot tapes for it are
dead.  I have the SunOS 4.1 boot tape set for the sun4 architecture,
but, the boot tape dies reading past the root fs tarball.  The second
tape is fine, and the first 7 files on the boot tape are fine, but that
is as far as I can recover files using various tape tricks folks suggest.
Currently I am running an almost working NetBSD on it, but, I really
would like to get a working set of SunOS boot tapes for it.  I have
asked around all over the net, but most folks have launched their
old cartridges into the bit bucket of tapedom.  Anyone on this list
have any leads or pointers to a spare set of SunOS 4.1 or 4.1.1
boot tapes that will work on the old sun4 architecture 4/260 class
machines?  I would hate to have to nuke the SPARC cpu and drop back
to a 68020/30 cpu in it, but that may be my only recourse if I can't
unearth any surviving tapes from the dustbins.  Surely something
still survives.....

Thanks

1. Problem booting Solaris 2.2 from CDROM on SUN 4/260

I am trying to install Solaris 2.2 on my 4/260 with little success.

My machine:

        Sun 4/260
        3 - 8 Meg memory cards
        Internal SCSI card
        Xylogics 450 SMD disk controller
        2 Fujitsu M2333 (280 Meg) disks

The system has been running SunOS 4.1.2 for over a year with no
problems.  SunOS 4.1.2 was installed from the CDROM in the same
manner that I am trying now.

Output from boot sequence:

Boot: sd(0,30,1)
si: peek failed
si: peek failed
si: peek failed
SunOS .... blah, blah, blah
Copyright .... blah, blah, blah
FPU Version 0 Present byt not supported

Panic vfs_mountroot: cannot mount root

Reboot

Then the system reboots.

1. The 'peek failed' message comes up every time I boot anything, and hasn't
   caused any problems.

2. I seem to remember that Solaris will not support the older FPU's but that
it will run on those systems and just not use the FPU.

3. The real problem seems to be the 'Cannot assemble drivers' message.  Can
anyone shed any light on this one for me?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

John
