Solaris 7 NFS black-outs

Solaris 7 NFS black-outs

Post by Alain Deutsc » Sun, 04 Apr 1999 04:00:00

Dear colleagues,

We have a network of SUN workstations running Solaris 7.

We have a recurrent problem, and I was wondering if anyone had
suggestions on how to fix it.

Problem description: NFS exhibits sporadic black-outs that last several
minutes and typically occur several times a day. These black-outs are
always preceded by a message "AUTHDES_VALIDATE: VERIFIER MISMATCH".

Apr  3 14:48:27 chateauneuf unix: NOTICE: authdes_validate: verifier
mismatch
Apr  3 14:51:27 chateauneuf unix: NFS server rhone not responding still
trying
Apr  3 14:51:27 chateauneuf unix: NOTICE: authdes_validate: verifier
mismatch
Apr  3 14:54:27 chateauneuf last message repeated 1 time
Apr  3 14:57:27 chateauneuf unix: NFS server rhone ok

We have discarded plausible hypotheses such as:

a) server overload
b) network congestion.

Any hint or help would be immensely appreciated !

        Alain.

Sorry, no hints, but I have the same problem (the messages are:
authconf: mountd not responding); additionally, sometimes
the automoounter (autofs) hangs, too.

Maybe a NIS(+)-related problem.

You are useing secure-nfs? maybe there is too big time differences between
client and server?

1. Avoiding DHCP missconfiguration in black-outs

Dear all,

I have three Linux running machines at the University. All of them get
the IP address using DHCP. However, recently it is usual to have power
black outs here, so not only my PC's fall, but also the DHCP server, so
sometimes I reach here in the morning and find that the only interface
running in my PC's is lo. Maybe the DHCP server is not avaible at the
time my computers are on again. I don't know.

I wonder if it is possible to solve this using some kind of cron task
that checks if eth0 is up, and if not to start it up.

Best regards,

Pascual.
