Our company is finally getting our databases updated allowing our migration
from SunOS 4.1.3_U1 to Solaris 2.5. Having never administrated Solaris 2,
I've had my work cut out with the changes, although it's nice work. I've
had a few problems that I haven't got a good grasp on, and I was hoping
someone might know the answer to a couple of these (Don't even know where
to start on hunting these problems down). I'm running Solaris 2.5 is a
Sparc 2000.
1. So far I can't regenerate this error on demand. It just comes and
goes. At times in CDE, I'll start the file manager, or open an xterm
session and I get the following error, "The request to service this action
has failed for the following reason. TT_ERR_PTYPE_START attempt to launch
instance of ptype failed." Again, most of the time the applications work
just fine, but on occasion I get the message.
2. I'll start the mail tool, and it'll sit there with only the window
outline drawn and none of the text portions of the window drawn for what
seems like forever. Just like my first problem, it only happens on
occasion.
3. When I telnet into the machine from someplace else, set the DISPLAY
environment, and kick of a remote xwindows session and call up shelltool, I
get the bourne shell. No problem, except my account is set for C shell,
and I always get the C shell unless I do the afore mentioned. Admittedly,
I've only been working on this machine for about a week, so I haven't tried
a lot of different combinations yet.
4. Maybe this isn't a problem, but it doesn't seem right to me. When I
start a CDE session, the cpu usage jumps to 50% or more for quite awhile
and even for some time after CDE looks to be fully loaded. Maybe nothing,
but it seems weird to inundate a Sparc 2000 that much with CDE. Like
Solaris 2.5, the Sparc 2000 is new to me.
These questions probably don't say much for my system administration
skills, but I have to start someplace <g>. Guess I didn't have to work to
hard administering Solaris 1 on some Sparc 20s. Thanks for any help that
can be provided.
