Will WABI support character based DOS applications???

Will the up and coming WABI for Solaris also support character
based DOS applications? Or will a product like SoftPC still be
necessary for "full" DOS application solution on Sparcstations?

Thanks,

No.
It works by translating Windows API calls, and will assume Windows
format for executables.

No.  Wabi does not handle any dos based applications.  You can however,
hook up a pif for your favorite dos emulator (such as SoftPC, etc) and
run your dos apps.

But surely not everything a Windows application does is a Windows
API call. ie. there is some translation of x86 machine code to
SPARC machine code. So isn't the "Dos Prompt" in the "Main" group just
an example of a Windows application, which either works or not under
WABI. I suspect it doesn't, though.

The latter is correct.

DOS goes through the varying DOS BIOS junk for characters. MS Windows
programs go through the Windows API. for _everything_.

Properly written ones, anyways.

Even though the W no longer means Windows... WABI only runs Windows.
WABI does allow you to call up a SoftPC like application
from within WABI to run DOS apps.

Ah.. let me rephrase that :-/

Properly written MS Windows programs go through the windows API for
everything that has some form of output, be it screen-output, sound-output,
or printer-output.

They although go through the API for input, apart from some forms of disk
access.

I can't imagine SunSelect implementing a TrueType engine, which does all kinds
of neat things like scaling and rotation.  If it translates a TrueType font
into a PostScript font, and then uses DisplayPostScript, does that not get
them into legal trouble?

1. questions about Wabi. WABI <---> WIN95 applications??

hi,

I'd like to use microsoft word and some other window application (visio) on
my solaris 2.5.1 workstation.

I have wabi 2.2 rev A installed on my workstation, but found out
that it is asking for WIN 3.1.

My question: is there a Wabi release to run Win95 applications and not
just just Win 3.1 ?

Has any one actually used Wabi to use word 6.0 (I'd rather use Word 7.0, but
that requires Win95). Has anyone also used Visio on Wabi?

Can one run any Windows application on Wabi? or some subset? how large
is this subset? is Wabi the best UNIX environment to run windows applications
on? I have heared of something called soft-windows, but know nothing
about it.

thanks,
Nasser
