Just guessing ... assuming you are running xdm on your server to provide access
to the server for your xterminals:

This sounds like you have been caught out by the defaults which come with the
xdm package. There is a file in the xdm package (probably in
/usr/openwin/lib/xdm/) called "Xservers" which will probably have the last line
as ":0 local /usr/bin/X11/X". This is telling xdm that it should manage the
console on the solaris box when xdm is started up, which can cause the lockup
that you may be describing. Comment this line out in the Xservers file (put a #
as the first character on the line) and restart xdm and all will probably be ok.

Hope this helps,

We have had a similar problem with 2.3: In our case somebody was running
two console xterms, and if you exit them in the wrong order, the console
is attached to some pts/NN and you have to reboot to get it back.

Check for -C in .xinitrc, or the respective incantations for cmdtool.

I suspect it is probably the same problem that we discovered, namely that
the user's default desktop configuration (started automatically during
window manager initialization) among other things creates an xterm window
using the -C option, which diverts console I/O and thereby steals the
console away from the login (or any other) process.  You should also look
for "-display :0" options on xterm and other X11 process invocations;
these request the default (console) display instead of using the one on
the *actual* intended X server, the X-terminal.  Naturally the sane thing
to do is to immediately configure the DISPLAY environment variable to
refer the the remote host (X-terminal) display, in one's .profile or
.login or .whatever.
