I just recently added 8.4gb of external disk space to my ss1000.  I need
to move solaris over to the new drives without re-installing.  Any
ideas?

  I just finished doing this a few days ago.  Here's the approach I'd
take...

  Change the SCSI ID of the new drive to something not used on your system.
Stick it in, and boot the system single-user or from the CD (to guarantee no
changes to the disk while copying) with the "-r" option to recognize the new
disk (or use "drvconfig", "disks", and "devlinks" in clever ways).  Format
and partition the new drive.  Build UNIX filesystems on all of the necessary
partitions with newfs.  Then use ufsdump/ufsrestore to copy the files over,
mounting the new filesystems as needed.  Install the boot block on your root
filesystem with installboot, and you should be all set.  Now change the SCSI
ID to what you were booting off before (or else tell the boot PROM what the
new boot device is, remembering to change the vfstab), cross all available
fingers and toes, and reboot multi-user.  Assuming that c0t3d0 is your old
drive and c0t0d0 is your new:

    $ format
    ( set up everything correctly and label disk)
    # Set up root
    $ newfs /dev/rdsk/c0t0d0s0
    $ mount /dev/dsk/c0t0d0s0 /newroot
    $ cd /newroot
    $ ufsdump f - /dev/rdsk/c0t3d0s0 |ufsrestore rf -
    $ installboot /usr/platform/sun4m/lib/fs/ufs/bootblk /dev/rdsk/c0t0d0s0
    # Set up /usr
    $ newfs /dev/rdsk/c0t0d0s6
    $ mount /dev/dsk/c0t0d0s0 /newroot/usr
    $ cd /newroot/usr
    $ ufsdump f - /dev/rdsk/c0t3d0s6 |ufsrestore rf -
    # And so on for all filesystems.

  Hope this helps,

-------Scott.

I would go with ufsdump/ufsrestore from old drive to new one.  Don't forget to run installboot.

1. Moving Solaris root disk: Sun4c <-> Sun4m

Back when I upgraded from a 4/490 to a 4/690MP, I was able to replace
/usr/kvm with the Sun4m architecture kvm files from the 4.1.3 CD-ROM.
This was useful in that I didn't have to completely re-install the OS.

Has anyone done this under Solaris 2.x? Is it just as simple as SunOS?
Specifically, I'm interested in moving a root disk from an IPX (Sun4c)
to a 4/630MP (Sun4m).

We tried moving a Sun4m kernel to an IPX and it wouldn't boot. It's my
understanding that Sun4m is a superset of Sun4c, so it should work in
reverse. That is, a Sun4c (UP) kernel should boot and run the 600MP
(in UP mode), right?

If anyone has played around with this, please send whatever info you
might have via e-mail in-addition-to/instead-of posting. I'll post a
summary of responses including our experiences.

Thanks!
