Suggestions on backup software

Post by fred_f.. » Sun, 21 Jan 2001 01:52:41

I'm currently in the process of buying some software to do my backups.
The machine I'm using is a Qualstar 4210 to backup various versions of
Solaris. I was leaning towards Legato, but I've been hearing bad things
about it. The other option I'm looking at is Veritas Net Backup.
Do any of you have any suggestions or comments regarding these?

1. Suggestions for best tape backup software.

Hi,

I have ordered a DDS 3 SCSI tape for my Linux box.

I have that machine, and 3 Windows 2000 boxes that I need to backup.
I would like to use the same tape drive for all, using the Linux box
as a tape server.  Plus, each one of the machines is going to require
at least 3 tapes (12 gigs uncompressed a tape)

I would like to find an integrated backup solution - one that will
make doing total system backups of all of the machines (Linux and W2K)
as easy as possible.  Ideally - something that if one of the machines
failed, I would boot off a rescue disk, connect to the linux box with
the backup tapes in it, and restore everything automatically.

Can anyone make any suggestions?  Something you use and like?  Free
software would be best, but if there is something out there with a
demo license, that I can try to see if I like it first, that could be
OK.

Thanks,
Greg
