Mounting Floppies under Solaris 2.5

Mounting Floppies under Solaris 2.5

Post by Dr. Ralph P. Sob » Sat, 12 Oct 1996 04:00:00

Thanks to all that answered!  Floppies are not autodetected like CDs.
Under Solaris 2.x one must simply run `volcheck' before accessing the
floppy drive.  Any user can run it!

Then vold will mount it something like:

/vol/dev/diskette0/unnamed_floppy
            713     635      78    90%    /floppy/unnamed_floppy

By the way, one person said that there was a CERT advisory that
recommended disabling the floppy drive in vold.conf anyway.

Thanks again,

I believe there was an advisory for an older copy of Solaris, in which
vold didn't mount media nosuid, so it was possible to create a CD (or
floppy, I'm not sure if floppies were mentioned) with a setuid shell
on it, and mount it as a normal user, thus allowing you to become root
just by having physical access to the box. I'm not sure but I think
that was for 2.3

1. HELP: Mounting Iomega Zip (100 MB) DOS Floppy on Solaris 2.5

Hi.  I have successfully UFS-formatted an Iomega Zip Disk 100 MB and
exported the filesystem over NFS.  Now, I'm trying to mount a DOS
(Win95)-formatted Zip Disk 100 MB, and, for the life of me, have not
been successful.  I know the file system type is "pcfs", but I have not
been successful using what I thin is the correct command:

mount -F pcfs /dev/dsk/c0t5d0s0 /mnt

By the way, a  similar command works for a UFS-formatted disk:

mount -F ufs /dev/dsk/c0t5d0s0 /mnt

Does someone know how I can mount a 100 MB Zip Drive DOS file system to
my Sun?
