Help needed with inn-1.4 under Solaris 2.3

Post by Jason Shuma » Thu, 06 Apr 1995 04:00:00

I had hoped to get inn-1.4 (yes, I have the security patched version) running
on our new SPARCclassic which runs Solaris 2.3.  The plan was to move news off
of a Linux box and onto the SPARCclassic.  I'm not real impressed with
Solaris 2.3.  Sometime when I really feel like ranting and raving I'll go
into how much the upgrade procdure from 2.3 to 2.4 sucks (I upgraded another
machine).  For now, I need help with inn-1.4 under Solaris 2.3.  I have a
small help file for Solaris I found somewhere and even it says that getting
innd to run under Solaris is problematic.  I kick off rc.news and it sends
this message to /var/adm/messages:
inndstart: inndstart cant bind Permission denied
Well, that's real helpful.  Anyone have any idea what this means my problem
is?  Any help to get this freaking thing to work under Solaris would be
appreciated.  I'm afraid if all else fails, we will have no choice but to
"downgrade" the box to SunOS 4.1.3 where at least we can get innd to run
without beating our heads against the wall.

Check your inetd.conf file and make sure that that port isn't being used. /etc/services
might also be a good place to check.  I have inn-1.4 working under Solaris 2.4 (with a lot of
tinkering)
