Jumpstart 2.6 - Install server w/ FDDI

Post by Scott Chapa » Thu, 08 Oct 1998 04:00:00

We're trying to configure jumpstart to use an install server
which has a FDDI interface.  The install begins then stalls:

  hostname: longleaf
  domainname: jonesctr.org
  root server: hal
  root dir: /export/install/Solaris_2.6/Tools/Boot

  RPC: Timed out
  NFS read timed out.  retrying

  These last 2 lines repeat.

_________
A snoop on the install server shows mount occuring:

674   0.00025          hal -> longleaf     BPARAM R WHOAMI? longleaf in jonesctr
.org
675   0.00247     longleaf -> hal          BPARAM C GETFILE root
676   0.00492          hal -> longleaf     BPARAM R GETFILE File=/export/install
/Solaris_2.6/Tools/Boot
677   0.11416     longleaf -> hal          PORTMAP C GETPORT prog=100005 (MOUNT)
 vers=1 proto=UDP
678   0.00432     longleaf -> hal          MOUNT1 C Mount /export/install/Solari
s_2.6/Tools/Boot
679   0.00044          hal -> longleaf     PORTMAP R GETPORT port=32885
680   0.01632     longleaf -> hal          NFS C LOOKUP2 FH=78FB platform
681   0.00045          hal -> longleaf     MOUNT1 R Mount OK FH=78FB
682   0.00299     longleaf -> hal          NFS C LOOKUP2 FH=65CE SUNW,SPARCstati
on-10
.
.
.

But then... the stall looks like this in the snoop.

715   0.01809          hal -> longleaf     NFS R READ2 OK (8192 bytes)
716   0.00033          hal -> longleaf     UDP continuation ID=37782
717   7.98192     longleaf -> hal          NFS C READ2 FH=8927 at 0 for 8192 (re
transmit)
718   0.00387          hal -> longleaf     NFS R READ2 OK (8192 bytes)
719   0.00027          hal -> longleaf     UDP continuation ID=37783
720   1.09079     longleaf -> hal          NFS C READ2 FH=8927 at 0 for 8192
721   0.40323          hal -> longleaf     NFS R READ2 OK (8192 bytes)
722   0.00029          hal -> longleaf     UDP continuation ID=37784

Any Insights welcome.

Probably the bootparams file is located at /etc/bootparams. I had
to move this to NIS+(or NIS) to make this work. I had the "files" entry
in the /etc/nsswitch.conf, but still it would not read /etc/bootparams.
Maybe it is at patch for this, but I could not find any.

I do not this has anything to do with FDDI, but as I said bootparams.

so, NFS mounting is having problems. probably different packet size between
fddi and the normal boot interface, le0 or hme0 or whatever.

Try defining the boot server to server through a "normal" interface, and see
if it magically works.

1. Jumpstart Solaris 2.6 over FDDI

Has anyone got Jumpstart to work with the Solaris 2.6 image over FDDI ?
I had very little problems making this work with the Solaris 2.4, 2.5 ,
& 2.5.1 images...

Thanks ahead for any input...
