Better 'trace' for SunOS 4.1.3 (like 'truss')?

Better 'trace' for SunOS 4.1.3 (like 'truss')?

Post by Balz Reche » Sat, 25 Jan 1997 04:00:00

Hi Everybody

Does anybody know about a better 'trace' tool for SunOS 4.1.3 than
the implemented version from Sun, which is not capable of tracing child
processes? 'truss' for Soloaris 2.x is capable to trace child processes
but, of course, doesn't run on SunOs 4.1.3.
It would be great if I could get an already compiled version.

Many thanks in advance for your help

Balz

Try looking for 'strace' in archie. I have only an old version (1994)
and it does not tell me where I got it from :-(

1. Why does SunOS crash for '(cmd &) >& /dev/null'?

Hello,

We have been experiencing problems with the following type of command in
csh of Sun Sparc1s running SunOS 4.1.1:

( command & ) >& /dev/null

Issueing a command like this on the command line crashes the machine
at a rate of about 1 in 3 times. However, running this sort of command
in a csh (-f) script or in the .cshrc before we do some stty commands
(yes, we make sure not to run these in an non-interactive shell) seems
to give no problems.

Is this a bug in SunOS or are we doing stupid things. We now know where
not to place it, but at the moment we are not sure that our 'safe places'
are really safe (i.e. they do cause crashes, only less frequent).

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
