utmpd goes nuts sometimes at 25% CPU, why?

Post by Geoff Haz » Wed, 30 Apr 1997 04:00:00

Sometimes, about once a week or so, our utmpd starts chewing up
25% CPU on our 4 Processor Sparc2000.  We stop and start it, and
then it's fine for a while.  Can anyone explain this behavior
or offer a cure?  I've already got a cron script checking it
and stopping/starting it, but would like to eliminate the problem.

Have you installed patch 104029-01 ("SunOS 5.5.1: utmpd daemon runs
away consuming CPU resources") ?

1. What the heck is going on! Sometimes the Virtual MXs work, sometimes not! NUTS NUTS NUTS

This is very strange. I have the named configs set up exactly as per the
instructions.
I have virtusertable and genericstable set up right.

yet - !!!!!  Generally after a reboot, I get this MX error message and the
mail fails.
HOWEVER !!!!!  arrrrrrrr......  if I rebuild the hash tables for
virtusertable and genericstable, then HUP sendmail .....  all the problems
go away.!

this is driving me NUTS. Nothing ever changes - except this happens after a
reboot sometimes .  Not all the time!
