strange problem with iPlanet Directory

Post by David Ferc » Thu, 02 May 2002 16:57:27

Hello there,

I installed iDS 5.1 on an Ultra 10 with Solaris 8 (02/02). I installed the
recommended patches and all patches shown by idsktune. I also changed some
system and tcp parameters. iDS will be started by it's own start-script
start-slapd from /etc/rc2.d ! Now, If I boot the system, iDS crashes with
an core dump. After login as root the script start-slapd runs nice and iDS
will be startet. Does someone knows about and how to solve the problem ?

Thank you for any hints. Maybe there's a way to figure out, why the start
of iDS on boot fails ?

No but try moving your startup script to /etc/rc3.d ...
That might be enough.

How are you starting DS in rc2.d?   If you try to start it
directly with command line, you get core dumps.

The secret is to call it early in rc2.d by calling the
   start-slapd script itself.

If you get the "Implementing LDAP in the Enterprise" book,
they have a prototype start script [starts both ldap and
the iPlanet admin server] and an install script that loads
it into init.d and links it from rc2.d.  It is easier to
mod the prototype with your pathnames and install it
   yourself.

Could swear I have seen similar materials on either Sunsolve
   or iPlanet.

If you can't get the book or find it, post again [or remove
the junk from my email] and mail me directly and I'll mail
you a copy of my script from my work address.

1. iplanet web server 6.6 + iplanet directory server (latest)

i want to password protect certain pages/directories on the webserver
- must i use ldap to do this with iplanet 6 sp6 web server?

i installed the web server, and then ldap... does the order affect
things, some postings suggest installing the directory server first,
and then iplanet web server?

i didn't and am having problems in the web server admin adding users,
etc. can i configure the directory server better for the web server
(do something manually)? is there something to adjust in the console
app for the web server to plugin better?

the errors in the ws admin is:

An error occurred while contacting the LDAP server.
(No such object)

The server could not locate the entry. If adding a new entry, be sure
that the parent of the entry you are trying to add exists. If you
received this error while searching or viewing an entry, it indicates
that the entry which was being searched for does not exist.
