sessreg doesn't work properly with xdm (Solaris 2.5.1)

Hello,

I have an annoying problem using sessreg under xdm.  I want to
be able to have a console user listed as being logged in, for
as long as they are logged in.  Without sessreg, they aren't listed
at all.  When using sessreg like this:

sessreg -{a,d} -l $DISPLAY -x /usr/openwin/lib/xdm/Xservers $USER

in the Startup and Reset scripts, I get entries like this:

liz   :0                            Tue May 13 20:54 - 20:55  (00:00)

which means the person logged in at 8:54 PM, but who knows when the
person logged off!  I want to keep better track than this.

If I run sessreg by hand, I get the expected entries in utmp/wtmp.

Specifics: Solaris 2.5.1, Sparc5 and Sparc 20 workstations
Using the vendor provided xdm and related X tools

Any help is appreciated.  Thanks!

1. Problem: xdm/sessreg/utmp don't work

Subject: Solaris 2.x xdm sessreg utmp problem
Keywords: xdm utmp sessreg

I cannot get sessreg to add entries to my /var/adm/utmp file.

I have Solaris version as follows:
SunOS Release 5.3 Version Generic_101674-01 [UNIX(R) System V]
Running Solaris 2.3 distributed xdm and sessreg.

sessreg is used for instance by xdm Xstartup commonly to update utmp and
wtmp files to keep track of logged in sessions.  sessreg does update the
wtmp file in my case but not the utmp file.  I will run sessreg as root,
make /var/adm/utmp world writeable, provide sessreg with options that it
shouldn't need, to tell it where utmp is ... I can not get sessreg to update
utmp.  It does update wtmp mind you.

What might be wrong?

Thanks.
