LUN > 2TB on Solaris 9?

LUN > 2TB on Solaris 9?

Post by Chri » Sat, 18 Mar 2006 00:18:32

Hello,

I'm trying to get a fibre-channel storage system running with a Solaris 9
machine. Everything works fine while using volumes < 2TB, but I would
prefer a bigger volume in my setup. This is not a problem in regard to the
filesystem, which supports up to 16TB, but the ssd driver seems not to
support this.

I think the newest patches for Solaris 10 provide a ssd driver that supports
luns which are bigger than 2TB, but I have found nothing relevant about
Solaris 9.

Is it possible at all to use volumes > 2TB with Solaris 9 or do I have to
use a volume management system (what I wanted to avoid) to connect multiple
smaller volumes?

Any help and hints are greatly appreciated!

Chris

We have found that stitching smaller volumes together is more reliable;
even more so since certain SAN-in-a-box products have problems presenting
LUNs > 2TB.

That must be wonderful!  I don't understand it at all.

You have to go to Solaris 10 - but that's a good thing! Fibre-channel
works fine, the only issue being that UFS at this size uses sparse
inodes; so it's fantastic for storing many large files, runs out of
inodes for zillions of small files. Can't wait for (production) ZFS.
So far, haven't found a scsi card that works - tried around 3 different
ones.

1. format and LUN > 2Tb

Hi,

   I've got a sun v40z with a storedge 3511 and i create a logical
device (with raid 5) which is > 2 Tb

However format give me an error message for the new LUN

# format
Searching for disks...
The capacity of this LUN is too large.
Reconfigure this LUN so that it is < 2TB.
