Hi,

i am trying to install a new font for netscape on the solaris platform.
since i am not root, i cannot change the /usr/X11/lib/X11/fonts/misc
directory. does anyone know where i should put the .pcf font file in my
own directory, and how to update my config files to let system/netscape
know of this new font?

thanks!

Put it anywhere you have write permission, but you may want to organize
it into your $HOME/.netscape directory, perhaps in a "pcf" subdir.

"man xset" and look for the fp+ option to add another font to your
fontpath, e.g.:

/usr/openwin/bin/xset fp+ $HOME/.netscape/pcf

Put the fonts in a dir like ~/fonts/, where you have write permission.
Then add the line "xset fp+ ~/fonts/" in the .xinitrc file. Restart the
X-server and you have the fonts.

Restarting the X server doesn't do anything in this case.  Using "xset fp
rehash" is a good idea.  Then restarting Netscape should do it.

1. A fix: Solaris 2.6 Type 1 fonts issue (& Netscape 4)

Hi

There is finally an explanation for the Type 1 fonts problem
on Solaris 2.6,  usually observed with Netscape 4 (but not limited
to this).

It's all down to a typo in a fonts.scale file.  To fix:

1. Edit /usr/openwin/lib/X11/fonts/Type1/fonts.scale
2. Find the line that reads

        Times-Roman.pfa -adobe-times-roman-r-normal--0-0-0-0-p-0-iso8859-1

and change the 'roman' to 'medium' thus:

        Times-Roman.pfa -adobe-times-medium-r-normal--0-0-0-0-p-0-iso8859-1

(spot the typo that has caused all this grief).

3. /usr/openwin/bin/mkfontdir /usr/openwin/lib/X11/fonts/Type1
4. Log out and in again to reset X server (because of caching the
damage is permamanent for each session once done).

Thanks go to Jurgen Keil who responded to my previous request here
for a test case that does not involve Netscape.  Thanks also to
our development engineer who had the patience to actually find this
typo!

A patch will be forthcoming before terribly long.

Cheers

Gavin
