Hello Chris,

I've just installed Solaris 8 on Sparc 5 on
IBM DDYS-T09170M Ultrastar SCSI 80pin 9.2 GByte disk without big
problems.
But I don't think that solaris 8 will be run fine on a sparc 5
because JAVA installation was VERY slow and during applying patches
cluster CPU load reached 100% !!

Slava.

Yes, it's running the 32bit solaris kernel

Well, they are necessary to hold the drive mechanically in place.
If you come up with another idea to hold the drive in place, that's
OK.

Define "fine". It supports the hardware, but depending on the CPU
speed (I think SS5's range from 70 to 170 MHz) and memory size
(it can take up to 256 MB, 8 slots which use 8/32 MB sticks)
and the applications you want to run it might feel slow.

Why *shouldn't* the load hit 100%?  The only time that the load should
not reach 100% is when the job isn't CPU-bound.  Patch installation is
mostly CPU bound because it's a very inefficient process that runs lots
of shell scripts and thus uses lots of CPU power.

Java will be slow, of course, but just because you're using Solaris 8
doesn't mean you're planning on using Java very much.

1. Sparc boot question/problem

Hi all,

I am a newbie with Sparc h/w and just got a Sparc 1+.  When I attempt
to boot into single user mode at the OK prompt with the command:
"boot kernel/unix -as", I get the message "file just loaded is not
intended for the cpu type specified."

Can anyone shed some light on this? One thing I did try is to reset the
system parameters to their defaults with "set-defaults", but this had
no effect.

Thanks in advance,
