Very new at this and need proxy / gateway help

I just recieved a new Axil 245 (sparc-5) that was running 2.5.1, However since
my work sent it to my house I have to run what they want. The software we run
is currently only running on SunOS4.??? Solaris 1.1.2 which they have walked me
through installing. I hate it. Nothing is simple in this old release. I got the
other up and running and on the net and installed gzip and nestscape and it was
just running cool. I was able to find an old version of gzip and I got that
installed I was able to create 2 new users (one for startx and one for openwin)
I installed Hummingbirds host for exceede. I also installed ppp and netscape.
However this took two days and netscape won't run through my win95 wingate
program to see the net like 2.5.1 did. Why is this not working I get tons of
errors when netscape starts stating I might need some patches where do I get

really need to get this thing up and on the net. How do I configure the PPP
that I installed (man pages and notes are to far out for me) to connect to my
NTrigue server. or can I get the connection up and running with old reliable
win95 and proxy / gateway through it. How should I do this. Thanks for any help
I need a life jacket.

Unfortunately, I don't have the time to give you the kind of in-depth
reply you deserve, but I will agree that SunOS (a.k.a. Solaris 1.x) can
be a real pain.  Unfortunately, so can Solaris!  :)

Anyway, if you are interested in running Solaris (which is definitely
what I'd recommend you run, considering it is newer, has too many
features to list here, and SunOS will not run the new software like CDE,
Wabi, Java, not to mention SPARC DOOM!), you should know that Solaris
does have a binary compatibility mode which will run many SunOS
programs.  I don't want to make any guarantees because the emulation is
not perfect and some programs don't work with it, but it's at least
worth a try if you need to run some SunOS software.  SunOS compatibility
is installed by default in Solaris, so just install the program you want
to run, and try it out.  If you have problems, post them up to this
newsgroup, and perhaps somebody can help you through them, especially if
it's a shell script that needs fixing to work under Solaris.

As for your other questions, the best response I can give briefly is:
For SunOS, use the file called "netscape_dns", not the regular
"netscape" binary (two versions are in the netscape.tar.gz file!).
First, install a file in /etc/resolv.conf with your DNS servers to use
(this is the same format as Solaris and nearly all other UNIX's, so you
should be able to find someone to help you).  As for PPP, each PPP
package is different, so it would help if you posted exactly which SunOS
PPP program you are using.

As for your other problems with Netscape, read the release notes, paying
special attention to the file called XKeysymDB.  The Netscape package
comes with this file, so be sure to install it in the right place.  If
you are getting different errors, please post exactly what they are, or
we can't help you.  As for patches, visit http://sunsolve1.sun.com/ and
download all of the Recommended Patches for Solaris 1.1.2 (there are a
lot of them!).  They fix some important bugs and security holes!
Unfortunately, you have to install them manually by typing UNIX
commands, unlike the Solaris patches which install automatically by
typing "installpatch".  Yet another reason to upgrade to Solaris, I
guess.  Good luck!
