It works for text printouts not postscript.  I have been
trying to get it to work for a month on and off and I uhave
just given up on it.  Just leave a 2.5.1 Solaris machine
on board as a printserver and build some scripts.

I just installed it on a 2.6 server the other day.  printing to
an jetdirect EX box.  Once I solved some other, as it turned out,
unrelated problems with the network.  (Sun in thier infinite wisdom
changed some of the NVRAM defaults in the ULTRA boxes. Caused my hub
to decide the server was a bad cable and segment it out. )
The jetadmin install went fine, had some problems with the box
not accepting changes from some parts of the software, but was able
to set them by telneting direct to the jetdirect box and setting them
there.
Setting up print queues and classes from jetadmin was a little
obscure, so after fiddling for a while I gave up and used admintool
to finish setting them up.  Test printouts went fine, both postscript
and ascii documents.
So I would say that jetadmin is good for basic setups and
hp printer troubleshooting.  For anything fancy I would go next to
admintool printing module, and then directly to the printer config
files.  There are other, much more complete and easier to use printer
administration tools out there, but they cost money.  Since I can
satisfy 99% of my printing needs with jetadmin and admintool, I don't
think that spending money on a printadmin tool is good in my situation.
If you have dozens of printers, in a complex network enviroment, then
spending a couple K$ on a high end printadmin tool is probably worth
it.

1. HP Jetadmin and Solaris2.5: must lp be setgid ?

I> My question is: How can I fix the problem without change the
I> setg(u)id bit in /bin/lp and get both lpr and lp working using this
I> version of the HP JetAdmin utility ? Any hints ?

Here is the answer: the scheduler log file was not the correct
permissions. To fix the problem:

        chmod a+w /var/lp/logs/lpsched

Many thanks for the replies. I hope it'll be useful to someone else.

For sure, the latest version of the software is at:

        ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/networking/software/sol_pkgadd.d0037
