DHCP vs MediaOne cable modem

DHCP vs MediaOne cable modem

Post by cos.. » Fri, 05 Mar 1999 04:00:00

i have an interesting problem...

i have mediaone cable modem service in los angeles.

client dhcp works fine both under windows and linsux, ie the machine gets its ip/nameserver/default route etc fine.

however it does *not* seem to work for my solaris sparc IPX...  if i plumb the
le0 interface and use /sbin/ifconfig le0 auto-dhcp primary, it times out every
time.

i *can* manually set the ip info, default route and access the net fine...

is there something odd about solaris client dhcp and/or dhcpagent?

im running 2.6 no patches (i just installed 2 mins ago)

any clues, i need this to work...

thanks

Whatever ifconfig says your network interface is, you must create an entry for it in /etc. For instance, I have SOlaris7 x86 and a 3COM card:

lo0: flags=849<UP,LOOPBACK,RUNNING,MULTICAST> mtu 8232
        inet 127.0.0.1 netmask ff000000
elx0: flags=4863<UP,BROADCAST,NOTRAILERS,RUNNING,MULTICAST,DHCP> mtu 1500
        inet 24.128.180.37 netmask fffffc00 broadcast 24.128.183.255

The elx0 iis the 3COM card. So I do the follwoing with it:

                touch /etc/dhcp.elx0

Then reboot, an the machine is on the net. Hope this helps.

1. DHCP & Mediaone's cable modem.

Hi;

I just loaded RedHat 6.0 and tried out my new cable modem with the same
results as the previous versions of Linux.  The dhcp client is 1.3 (which,
according to the documentaiton is supposed to fix some these problems).  I
keep getting a time out waiting for valid DHCP reply message in my logs.

Mediaone doesn't provide any help for this; they say they only support MS
viruses - operating systems.

Does anyone have a cable modem working with MediaOne?  Any tips on what I
might try now?
Thanks for any help.
