Problems using cdrecord sd to mount CD-R as CD-ROM

Post by Brian D. Hann » Thu, 19 Aug 1999 04:00:00

Greetings from Minnesota, USA.

I am extremely impressed with Joerg Schilling's work on the cdrecord
software!
I was able to get the software installed and working with very little
trouble.
The doc was good. The hints were good.

I can record fine, but I'm having trouble mounting the CD-ROM
afterwards.
This is a Yamaha CDR-400tX.

vold is running. I've installed the sd software and rebooted. Here's
what I
see on boot:

Aug 17 16:10:38 thor unix:  SunOS Release 5.5.1 Version
Generic_103640-03 [UNIX(R) System V Release 4.0]
...
Aug 17 16:10:51 thor unix: sd5 at esp0: target 5 lun 0

Aug 17 16:10:51 thor unix: secdiv: 9 secsize: 512
Aug 17 16:10:51 thor unix:      <>

Later, when I shove in a valid CD-ROM from Sun, it looks like the vold
sees it and tries to deal with it:

Aug 17 16:13:24 thor unix: secdiv: 9 secsize: 512
Aug 17 16:13:27 thor unix: WARNING:

Aug 17 16:13:32 thor unix: WARNING:

(sd5):
Aug 17 16:13:32 thor unix:      logical unit not ready
...(it tries twice)...

And then in the /var/adm/vold.log:

Tue Aug 17 16:13:51 1999 warning: cdrom_read: can't read the cdrom (No
such device or address)

So, is there something I'm doing wrong? Has anyone seen this before? I
looked
in the doc on the website and on dejanews, but I didn't see anything.
Any
help is GREATLY appreciated!

Thanks again for the great software,

Brian Hanna

Upgrade to Solaris 2.6 or later or switch the drive to 512 bytes/sector.

Problems using cdrecord sd to mount CD-R as CD-ROM

Post by Brian D. Hann » Thu, 19 Aug 1999 04:00:00

I checked the Yamaha web page for the CD-R400 at
http://www.yamahayst.com/techsup/cdr400jm.htm It shows a single block size jumper
available, either ON or OFF. It calls this the "Select Read Block Size" and
states it must be enabled for any Unix based system. So not exactly 512
bytes/sector,  but what the heck, I tried it. It worked! Now I can write and read
CD-ROMs.

Thanks!

Greetings,

I assume you are running Sparc. I am x86 and cannot find a binary of
cdrecord nor compile it.

Trying to compile 1.6.1.........

        make

I get...........................

/usr/ucb/cc: language optional software package not installed
        command failed for target 'OBJ/i386-sunos5-cc/fgetline.o

If you did compile cdrecord successfully, I'd appreciate hearing about
it, and hopefully a response to what my difficulty entails.

Cordially,

Courtney

You don't have a C compiler.

Recent versions of Solaris don't come with a C compiler; get the GNU C
compiler from www.sunfreeware.com.

Problems using cdrecord sd to mount CD-R as CD-ROM

Post by Thomas Tornblo » Fri, 20 Aug 1999 04:00:00

Is the drive set to use 512 byte blocks? These are the messages you
get when using a CDROM with 2k block size.

I know nothing of the Yamaha, but the Plextor CD-R:s we use have a
switch/strap that changes the block size from 2k to 512b.

1. CD-ROM mount needs source <--> source needs CD-ROM mount

I've just ploughed through the entirety of misc, hardware and setup, to no
avail;  I installed Linux from the sbpcd boot disk (as I have a Panasonic
CD-ROM drive hanging off a SoundBlaster-compat. card), and the CD-ROM drive
chugged away happily to give me the OS.  However, my concerns about the size of
everything I was prompted to install made me decide NOT to install the linux
source.

Now, when I boot up the CD drive cannot be mounted because of 'wrong fs, blah
blah, or other error'.  I interrogated sbpcd.h (I *did* install the includes)
and the setup was incorrect.  Because I can't mount the CD drive I can't get
the source off the CD - re-booting off the boot disk (sbpcd) and trying a
reinstall  from the CD using setup gives a warning that the CD drive can't be
mounted.

Should I delete the linux partition and start from scratch again?  I do really
need to access the CD drive, and I realise now that it is kind of useful to
have the OS source.

Apart from that, it's great having a proper OS on my PC at last!
