Does Solaris 2.1(Intel) *BUG* for you ?

Post by Anders Sk » Thu, 21 Apr 1994 03:46:42

Hi!

I've installed Solaris 2.1 a few weeks ago, and I'm not impressed
with how stable the system is. (Especially openwindows).
I'm running this on a Dell ME with an Adaptec 1740 SCSI controller
and 3COM579 Ethernet card.

The problems I've encountered so far are:

- Openwin hangs on startup.  This happens about every third time
I start it.  The screen goes yellow and nothing happens as the
video card switches from text mode to graphics mode.

- File manager crashes.  It's possible to make the trash can crash ( and
leave a core dump in the trash can.)

- Once I got an I/O error while copying to disk, and the screen went
  blank.  Suddenly the machine rebooted.

- Sometimes the cursor disappeares in text mode.

- Some programs can stop openwin from reacting.  The only way out is
to telnet in from another computer and kill the process.

Does this happen to everyone else ?
I've not added any patches to the system, as they're a bit hard to get
now, with Sun's new policy for distribution of patches.

Why run Windows when Dosshell is faster and offers taskswitching too?

Sounds a lot like my brief experience with 3.1 x86. Now we simply don't run
Openwindows at all - in fact, we only ever access the machine via telnet, as
tre lack of virtual consoles was too much for me!

Having said that, it hasn't crashed since we stopped trying to use X...

Ummm, in 2.1 there are Virtual Terminals..... You've just
got to know how to turn them on and speak nicely to the machine.

See the XFree86 2.1 README.SOLX86.

(Unfortunately, I hear they went away in 2.4EA :(   )

Have you tried XFree86?  Its significantly faster than x86 OW3.1, and
seems to be a bit more stable, and supports VT switching, more
supported video cards.. etc... (Shall I continue?  :) )

(Granted I'm probably a little biased, I'm one of the porters)

Just as a FYI, XFree86 2.1 is available from ftp.x.org, in
/contrib/XFree86

Although Sun doesn't guarantee them for the next release. Xfree386
is based on virtual consoles, I believe.

Try duplicating the /etc/inittab line running /dev/console for
/dev/vt01 (etc.), and there you are.

They're supposed to be completely gone in 2.4EA.  And XFree86 3.0
(when it comes out) will no longer support VT's.  (They're at best
hacked into XFree86 2.1)

Quote:>Try duplicating the /etc/inittab line running /dev/console for

Its not quite that simple.  You HAVE to change both the id field
and the device, and you'll probably want to change
the prompt string, so you'll know what VT your logging into.

See the README.SOLX86 at your local XFree86 ftp site.  It
explains it (hopefully) much better.
