CD Writer Question

Post by Michael S. Hym » Tue, 18 Jun 1996 04:00:00

Hello, we are looking at buying a Writable CD unit. It will need to
do the following:

1. Write OS disks, bootable on SunOS, Solaris, HP-UX and AIX.

2. Write ISO-9660 and Rockridge format CD's.

3. Run on a Solaris 2.4/5 or SunOS 4.1.4/4 platform.

4. Be a 'production' quality system.

5. Hopefully be from a local (Silicon Valley) vendor.

Any help would be very helpful, since we are not 'up' on
these devices.

Thanks in advance...Michael

There are 3 cd writer software that will do what you want.  The best
one being Young Mind's Makedisc software, it's not cheap, easily twice
the cost of other softwares.  Gear, another unix software will fit your
bill, I'm not sure about bootability on HP-UX or AIX.  This is the one
I used on Solaris for the last year or so.  It works well for the most part.
There is also CD-publisher, Hy-CD which I have no experience.  The best
writer is probably Yamaha's 4x cd writer.

The total cost for Gear & Yamaha cost about $3500.

I agree. I do our production mastering on the Young Mind box with a yamaha
writer, and it works like a champ.  We have moved the unit to ouir DEC box,
but I burned a great many CD while it was attached to our Solbourne 6E running
4.1.3

CD Writer Question

Post by Robert Hardeste » Sat, 29 Jun 1996 04:00:00

I have a SPARC station model 47 with SUN UNIX on it, I don't know the
root password. I was told to hold down the "A" during power up and I'd be
placed in single user mode. I do get into single user mode but when I
attempt to change the password I get a message "File system is write
protected" any ideas?

1. Smart and Friendly CD Writer Question

I'm trying to use a Smart and Friendly CD writer with Linux.
I'm running Slackware 3.1, kernel 2.0.  According to the Mini HOWTO,
this was not listed as a supported model, but I was wondering if
anyone has had any luck using this drive with Linux.

Please respond to the newsgroup and cc a copy to me.

Thanks,
Mark
