adding a second hard drive to a blade system

Post by Greg Conwa » Sun, 13 May 2001 02:27:46

Hello.  I'm having a problem getting my Sun Blade 100 workstation to
recognize
a second 15 GB hard drive I recently added.  I was under the impression
that the
kernel was auto configuring and would just recognize and adapt itself to
the new
hard drive, leaving me to format, fdisk, and mount it.

However, when I add the second hard drive, I don't see any new entries
in
/dev/rdsk, /dev/dsk, or /devices.  The format(1M) command shows only
one hard drive, which I assume is the original hard drive that shipped
with

Manually running devfsadm(1M) didn't change anything.  I've tried two
different hard drives and two different cables, and I have verified that
my
second hard drive is on the second EIDE controller, pin one matches up,
and the drive is set to "cable select" (I tried it as a "single drive"
too, that
didn't help).

Has anybody else had any problems like this?  Is there something else I
have
to do to configure the OS to recognize a new hard drive on the second
controller?

e-mail is preferred as I can't read this group regularly.  Please drop
me a
reply if you have any thoughts or suggestions.  Thanks!!

Did you check dmesg to see if the drive is recognized?  And then did you
"boot -r" (as a Sun newbie I'm not sure of the alternatives to "boot
-r")?

From the command line as root:

1. touch /reconfigure
2. init 6

From the OpenBoot (ok) prompt:
1. boot -r

1. Adding second hard drive and file system questions.

Hi:

I just bought a new hard drive for my linux.
But I had problem in loading file system on it.

This was how I did it. First, I partition this
hard drive, and then I added a line in /etc/fstab
to make it load a new file system(/usr2) on the
new partion(/hdb/hd#) on the new hard drive.
But when I re-booted it, I got error messages
saying that my superblock info was messed up,
and therefore it tried to use the old one...

Can anyone tell me what I did wrong? What's the
correct way to do this? Please email me your
advice. I'll very appreciate it!!
