ttymon error:ttymon cannot allocate controlling tty on /dev/console

Post by S?ren Vejrup Carlse » Sat, 27 Nov 1999 04:00:00

I can't at the moment make a console login to my Sun Solaris 2.7 box,
but only login remotely by way of ssh or rlogin.
If I try to make a console login, it gives the following messages:

Warning -- ttymon cannot allocate controlling tty on
"/dev/console". There may be another session active on this port.

Have any one got any ideas for the solution to this problem?

Something else is using your console for some purpose.

Use "ps" to see what it is (hint: look at the TTY
field for "console").

1. ttymon cannot be respawned for /dev/console

Sometimes, when I killed a user's X server on his console, ttymon cannot
respawn for /dev/console. So, the user will not get login prompt on his
console. When i try to manually run the ttymon in /etc/inittab:

/usr/lib/saf/ttymon -g -h -p "`uname -n` console login: " -T sun
-d /dev/console -l console -m ldterm,ttcompat

I got the error message:

Push (ldterm) on /dev/console failed, errno = 6

Anyone can tell me how I got this problem and what I should do to
restart ttymon for /dev/console beside reboot the machine?

Thanks
