Is there a Solaris IP hop count parameter ?

Is there a Solaris IP hop count parameter ?

Post by Kirk » Wed, 06 May 1998 04:00:00

Hello !!!

Can anyone help me with this one...

I can only ping a certain distance into a network; past that point I get no
reply.  I have got my default router set up correctly because I can ping past
my local router.  If I telnet into my local router I can ping as far as I like.
I was wondering whether there is a file that I need to edit or create that
adjusts the maximum number of IP hops.  At the moment I think the number of
hops is four.
I am running Solaris 2.5.1.

Any help anyone ?

Thanks in anticipation,

Steve

The number of hops Solaris uses by default is 255 (the maximum TTL value
allowable)

ndd /dev/ip ip_ttl
ndd /dev/tcp tcp_ip_ttl

If you can't go any further that might indicate a a routing problem.
(You probably can route anywhere, but the systems further afield
can't get back to you)

BTW, I once noticed a problem where Solaris tried to RST TCP segments
that came in on a connection that was dead due to the Sun rebooted.
The problem was the Sun did originate the RSTs neither with the ip_ttl
nor with the tcp_ip_ttl but reflected the TTL of the received segment
unchanged into the outgoing RST. The RST never made it to the other
side because it died some hops before that (originator seemed to use
a TTL of 32 only, and roundtrip hop count was greater). Has this been
fixed in the meanwhile ?

1. Anyone know how to increase IP hop count ??

I can't ping past a certain distance in my network.  I think it is four routers
away maximum.  The question is WHY  WHY   WHY !!!

If I telnet into my own defaultrouter it can ping a zillion hops away so why
can't my Solaris 2.5.1 machine do likewise.

This is giving me loads of grief at work !!  Any ideas would be very gratefully
received.

THANKS !!
