auto-install of optional software

Post by Gary Mil » Sat, 10 Jun 1995 04:00:00

I'm in the process of configuring Casper Dik's auto-install and auto-update
system for a bunch of workstations.  I can't see an obvious way to install
things that don't come on the Solaris CD, such as Power Management, License
manager, and SunNet products.  Has anyone figured out how to automate this
process?  I have the added complication that /opt will be mounted from a
server.

Mounting /opt from a server isn't really a complication: that's the environment
we developed the autoinstall scripts in.

Adding packages is possible, as long as you first copy them to disk and
subsequently add them with:: pkgadd -n -d /some/dir pkg1 ...
You may need to write a special admin file to prevent any questions from
being asked during package install.

I really would like an easy option, to exclude all stuff, that goes
into /opt in the auto-install configuration. I can add to NFS mount
/opt from the server, but selecting SUNWCall will try to install all
the packages, that are already installed into /opt on the server. I
have to find out manualy every package, that installs into /opt and
delete these packages in the config file. And with every new release,
there are new packages, or package names change.

I have to add, /opt is export RO.

1. Installing optional software from jumpstart post install script

I would like to be able to install the SDK and SunSoft WorkShop compilers
from a jumpstart postinstall script.  Has anyone else been able to figure
out how to do this?  It would be preferable if it could proceed without
human intervention.  We will be installing Solaris 2.5 on ~100 identical
systems and do not relish the idea of having to install SDK and WorkShop
manually.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Dan Ehrlich
