ultra 2 won't boot with CPU upgrade

Post by Dan Stromber » Thu, 23 Jun 2005 03:51:11

Hi folks.

I got a hand-me-down Ultra 2, which worked fine with CPU modules it came
with, but these CPU's won't boot Solaris 10 - so I picked up a 401-4849
CPU module for it, but:

1) The Ultra 2 won't boot with the 501-4849 (300 MHz) CPU slot,
irrespective of which slot I try (there are two)

2) The Ultra 2 won't boot with the 501-4849 CPU module in either slot with
either of the two original CPU modules

What do I need to do to get the poor old thing working with Solaris 10?

Thanks!

I assume you had old 200 MHz (or less) modules, otherwise they would
have booted s10.

You need to change jumper J2301 from 2-3 to 1-2, which changes the
prescaler from 2 to 3.

You may need a new motherboard, OBP upgrade, or both.

Ultra 2 OBP 3.7v0 and CPU >=501-3132-07 is required.
UPA Terminator 501-4843 is required if only one module is installed on Ultra
2 CPU <=501-3132-12.
Jumper J2301 on Ultra 2 system board 501-3132 may need to be adjusted for
the 300MHz module.

I imagine you've tried this, but those U2 cpu's can be not-quite seated
and cause trouble; don't rely on the position of those extraction levers
to show if the modules are fully inserted.

I changed this jumper, made sure the CPU module was seated well, and I'm
installing Solaris 10 as I write this.

Thanks to all who responded!

You also need to make sure that the PROM is upgraded first and some
of the modules need different jumper settings.

1. Won't Boot After CPU Upgrade (AMD K6-2 266)

Have Debian Slink installed on /dev/hda4 (kernel .2.0.34)
Upgraded CPU from AMD K5 PR133 to AMD K6-2 266
Linux no longer boots from hard disk
Lilo still boots win95 and linux will boot from CD.
Tried cp kernel to /dev/fd0 won't but that either.
Won't boot if put lilo on floppy.
Put K5 back in and it will boot fine.
Also tried a 2.2.9 kernel from floppy and that wouldn't boot either.

I'm out of ideas.......help !!!!
