Hello,
I've got performance problems with my Enterprise 450, Since the
applications (networkmanagement software i.e. HPOV NNM, CWSI) requires
more memory, we first increased this from the previous 256Mb to 1 Gb.
Still the system verry slow. I asumed that swap space (500mb at the
moment) must be twice the internal memory but the SUN engineer I spoke,
sad that solaris even works without swap space. (depending on the
applications) What is the best way to troubleshoot such problems ? I see
that the CPU idle is low and according to the SUN engineer the
fr(scan-rate) counter is to high.

               re        page reclaims - but see  the  -S  option

               mf        minor faults - but see the -S option for

               pi        kilobytes paged in

               po        kilobytes paged out

               fr        kilobytes freed

               de        anticipated short-term memory  shortfall
                         (Kbytes)

               sr        pages scanned by clock algorithm

sr is the scan rate (which is 0 <fine>)

I can understand why you are having performance problems with 0-1% idle
time.

Well as pointed out your scan rate is actually zero which is a good thing. How
many CPUs are in the machine? What speed?  You could try trussing the top
process to see what's going on under the covers. Might want to also make sure
all the patches are up to date.  There were some significant fixes in the
kernel patches.  The 85/15 ratio on the user/system of the CPU sure make me
think somethings not quite right... like bad code....
