Tar Command

Post by harikrishn.. » Fri, 22 Oct 1999 04:00:00

I am trying to restore some file from a DLT Tape. I am using tar. When I
do the restore I want the restore to be put in a different directory.

My tar command is:
tar xvf /dev/rmt/0cn <name of the file to restore which i get from tar
listing>

Any help will be highly appreciated.

1. using tar command to extract tarred files

From reading the man: tar entry in UNIX, I deduced that the way to extract files from a gzip-1.2.4.tar file I had downloaded was with the command:
tar -x 20f gzip-1.2.4.tar.  But I keep getting the error message:
tar: /dev/rmt8: No such device, with the above command and variants on it.
Can anyone tell me how to extract the files and perhaps what is going on here?

                                       Thanks in advance,
                                               Mark
