How to connect to internet via modem

Post by Carlo Glinetz » Mon, 06 Jul 1998 04:00:00

Hi,

I have installed solaris 2.5.1 for x86 on my PC
and I want now to connect to internet, but I dont know how
to configure.
Under W95 or NT I receive a IP-Adress from my Provider
at dialup, but I've seen no documentation about that for
Solaris, do I need to have a fix IP-address?
Also my modem does not dial, when I try to connect, maybe
I've not the good configuration for it, I have a US Robotics
Sportster Flash

Thanks in Advance.

Read man ppp, man aspppd and consult the answerbook.
You can setup ppp to get a dynamic IP Address from your provider.

I had a lot of problem with Modems and PPP on Solaris x86.
Eventually after many hours I found out that Sun offers Solstice PPP (Client
only at no charge.. except that I had to purchase the CD for $50.00 (Better this
than spending 24 Hours trying to setup asppp IMHO)) .

Be forewarned that after I got the PPP Tool working , I had to modify the Login
Script.. Then I could only connect if I I setup debugging info with PPPTool -9
...

Anyway if I appear to be complaining , I am.  Since trying to setup a dial
connection is really a big hassle even with the Solstice PPP. This is one of
those thing that any OS maker should take into account and make as easy as
possible.

Currently I an using cable modem and I dread going back to modem Communications
, is it is such a hassle with Solaris and OS2.. That is one of the major reason
I stopped using OS2.

Good Luck.

PS. If you need the Solstice PPP CD ... make me a decent offer and it is yours.

If you have a compiler available (you can just download a gcc package)
there are several free PPP packages available for Solaris. These seem to
give you a much nicer time of it than the Solaris package.

Have a look at http://users.orac.net.au/~doug/network which contains
setup instructions for a package called DP
(http://www.acn.purdue.edu/dp/dp.html).

An alternative is at http://photon.nepean.uws.edu.au/ppp/index.html
which uses a package called Free PPP
(ftp://cs.anu.edu.au/pub/software/ppp/)
