Setting encoding to 8859-2 , locale to slovak

Setting encoding to 8859-2 , locale to slovak

Hello ,

* My Solaris version is 5.6 .  When I try to set the locale to slovak
(sk_SK ) by giving
   setenv LANG sk_SK
I get the message
  "Could not setup locale properly"

* I noticed that in /usr/lib/locale/  there is no directory for sk
though there are directories for some other languages .
How can I install Slovak locale in Solaris ?

* But actually I do not really need Slovak locale . I just need to set
encoding to ISO8859-2. When I give
  setenv LC_CTYPE ISO8859-2
Still I get
  "Could not setup locale properly"

Can anybody clarify  how to install slovak locale or just set encoding
properly ?

Thanks in advance
Remesh

Solaris 2.6 (I guess you mean this) is quite old and doesn't have
locales for all languages. You could try to set the LC_CTYPE to another
language using ISO8859-2 (e.g. Czech). Check what directories you have
in /usr/lib/locale and try one of them.

There is also a chance that only part of the locales was installed and
you have to add support for other languages from the install CD. What is
the content of /usr/lib/locale?

1. Does Linux support ISO 8859/x Char Encoding Stds?

Question 1:  Does Linux support the ISO 8859/x (where x=1 to 10) standards
for 8-bit character encoding?  If so, what does one need to do to enable
the use of a different character encoding (i.e. do I need to set an
environment variable to tell the OS that I want to switch from 8859/1 to
8859/6 or what)?
