I have a maxtor D540 40G IDE I want to add as a secondary drive on a
Ultra10 solaris 7.  Does anyone have any experience - particularly with
wkat needs to be in the format.dat file?  Thanks.

To fix this problem you have to know the following

If you are using Solaris X86 the PC- Bios provides this data.
Sparc-machines

Solaris format has not had need of the format.dat file in many years. It can
read the geometry directly from the disk and build a custom label
automatically.

The only reason you need format.dat information is if you're running RAID
arrays, and need to replace a failed disk with one of the exact same type. In
this case you could use any brand or model of 4.5GB disk, and label it as a
SUN4.2G, for example.
