x86 PPP - Need help - is_if_up: SIOCGIFFLAGS failed

Post by Michel Lamarch » Sun, 23 Mar 1997 04:00:00

Hi,

I have a Pentium 133 system running x86 2.5.1 Server with a USR 33.6
Sportster
modem on COM 2. I have a dedicated line to my ISP up to 33.6.

After reading my ISP PPP instructions, the Answerbook, Celeste's
Tutorial on
Solaris 2.x Modems & Terminals, a PPP Cookbook for Solaris 2.x from the
net,
the Outbound PPP Setup Guide for Solaris 2.x from Michael McKnight and
the
SunService PPP Tip Sheet, I am at a lost trying to get Solaris's PPP to
work.

Tip and cu in all its variants work fine.
        /usr/lib/uucp/Uutry -r -x9 ... and cu -d -L ...
negotiate properly with my ISP and get to PPP packets.

But when I try to start PPP in any way I get the following in
/etc/log/asppp.log:

19:43:28 Link manager (99) started 03/22/97
19:43:28 is_if_up: SIOCGIFFLAGS failed
Error 6: No such device or address
19:43:28 Link manager (99) exited 03/22/97

I can't for the life of me find a pointer to the condition or understand
its
meaning.

The rest of my configuration files are as follows based on the following
assumptions:

dedicated link
my IP 111.111.111.111
the Gateway is at 111.111.111.1
the nameservers are at 111.111.111.2 and 111.111.111.3

i've had trouble with the usrv32-ec settings in dialers.  i use the same

are you trying to connect your lan (if you have one) to your ISP or
workplace?  the net notation in /etc/gateways is odd to me in that
similar experiments have failed for me (where i tried similar notations).

lastly, can you post a output of netstat -rn prior to trying to start a
ppp session and one after that.  also, how many aspppd daemons do you have
running (both before and after trying to initiate ppp connections?

i don't know if any of this will help, but it seemed worth a try to me.

I had this problem when I installed a PPP patch (either 104517-01 or
103294-02 depending on whether you are using 2.5.1 or 2.5).  When I
backed out of the patch everything was OK, and PPP worked again.  If you
have either patch installed, try backing out.

Does anyone know why the patch doesn't work???

I too applied the latest and greatest patch as well
{2.5.1_x86_Recomended}
and it broke ppp as well, ended up manualy backing out all but the Motif
and the Kernel patch .Seems to have fixed a problem with system hangs,
but i would also like to add that the previous patch did the same .
Not really to easy to figure out because it seems that the devices
are still there and i did'nt change any thing else. Not knowing what
broke PPP I did'nt exactly know what to back out. Now if could get
gcc and xmkmf to work right...

1. DIALD fails ppp-on fails ppp-go works HELP!!!

Hi, I hope you guys can help. this is the second night seeing the dawn
break by the looks of things.

I had  1 Linux ( Slackware 3.5 kernel 2.0.34 ) and 1 Win95 PC networked.
Modem on Linux

could not get ppp-on / ppp-on-dialer to work at all. read the groups til
my eyes fell out.

Someone mentioned pppsetup   AH Bliss   5 minutes and we were surfing.

Decided I would put on and old 486, stick it up in the loft with the
modem on it and run diald.

But diald readme man pages examples etc all talk about ppp-on and
ppp-on-dialer scripts.
It says ' If you had them working then you are almost there '

Well I installed diald and tried to get it to work. No joy.

Just the same as ppp-on

tail -f /var/log/messages showed it got to point
where it waited for assword:
then failed 10 times out of ten. Tried changing timeouts etc but no joy.

ran pppsetup  bingo 5 minutes and surfing again

What do I do?  Can I graft the bits from ppp-go and pppscript into diald
files to get it to work?

please help

thanks in advance
