Dave Olson for Solaris is called Casper HS Dik, every bit as good
though not as omnipresent as Dave Olson.

Every now and then a Sun engineer or salesperson will post an informative
factual user friendly tidbit to one of the comp.sys.sun newsgroups...

And then you never see another post from that individual again!

I suspect that Scoot McBreezy sends a bunch of thugs to that individual,
and after a brief discussion, that individual finds it very difficult to
post with all of their fingers broken...

If that isn't Sun's policy, why does it seem so?

This post could be followed up by either a bunch of Sun Salespeople or
Engineers disputing my position,  or by silence...

Or they will follow up, and then be silent  ;^)

Read more of them more often.  Quite a number of Sun employees post
regularly or semi-regularly.  I suspect that unlike some other hardware
vendors, Sun has no "we pay you to do X and Y and be our liasion to our
newsgroups" people, so you get what they have spare time for rather
than part of their job.  But I've seen several people posting over
a period of three or more years.

Of course, if they post something *wrong* ... ;-)

Because you haven't been paying a -bit- of attention, and are more
than willing to make sweeping statements with a near-complete lack of
relevant information?

Actually, if you -bother- to scan your news headers for "eng.sun.com"
and "casper", I believe you'll find a number of pithy articles (I just
did: in trn use /eng.sun.com/h)

This is not true, I've never had a thug coming after me and suppress my
posts. I'm trying to be extra careful since I started working for Sun;
I can no longer indulge in speculation on future hardware/software
products, nor do I feel that it is appropriate for me to get too
involved in vendor bashing; I do get occasional complaints when Sun
users tell SunService that "but that isn't what Casper said, Casper
said .." or "Casper said there's a problem X/to use patch foo, but you
deny it".  Whatever disclaimer I put on my posts, it still has "Sun.COM"
all over it.

You should take care when you quote statements of company individuals
back to other parts of that same company.  These individuals are trying
to help you, often outside work hours.  Qouting them back to, e.g.,
the company service organisation may lead to complaints and may restrict
their ability to post.

Before I worked at Sun I heard one such rumor;, which seemed to be dating
back at SUn's early years.  I've found no proof of it yet.
(But perhaps they haven't noticed that I work for Sun yet :-)

If you look careful through posting in comp.unix.solaris, you'll
find many regular posters from *.Sun.COM, further proof against such
"gang of thugs".  We just don't seem to have a very big usenet
culture here at Sun.  There are a lot of lurkers, and they do
notice complaints about Sun bugs but they may chose not to follow
up.

Expressed in this posting are my opinions.  They are in no way related
to opinions held by my employer, Sun Microsystems.
Statements on Sun products included here are not gospel and may
be fiction rather than truth.

I don't see that at all. Brad Powell is a frequent and valuable poster to
the comp.mail.sendmail groups and I've seen frequent postings by Greg Onefer
both here and on other groups.

Has anyone at Sun ever thought of setting up a Web page for users
of Solaris to posts bugs to? Not everyone has service contracts
to call in bugs.  At least with the WEB page it would be for everyone
and could consolidate some of the bugs that are posted in comp.unix.solaris
but fall through the cracks, as this usenet group is not a supported forum.

This is not to knock the effort of people from *.Sun.Com since I think
they do a great job, but like another Sun Engineer pointed out once
someone from Sun.Com replys to a post, his/her email address is now
public, and the thanks they get is unsolicited email about other
Solaris problems.

Just a thought.

I have learned alot from this group, and as a programmer who also is
forced to do all Solaris admin for my group, the people at Sun.com have
helped me a great deal by posting to this group.  I think people forget
sometimes that answering Q&A in this group is not part of Sun Engineers
jobs and that they have lives too ;)

Take care.

Well, as one who's been posting to comp.unix.solaris for years, I can assure
you it's not Sun's policy to discourage posts to this group.  The real problem
is that most people have other responsibilities beyond reading and replying to
postings, and once one posts to this newsgroup one receives a fair amount of
unsolicited requests for help from various people.  Anyone ascribing my
frequent typos to broken fingers is being entirely too kind :-)
