XSun memory consumption

XSun memory consumption

Post by Ron Nev » Thu, 07 Dec 1995 04:00:00

We are running Solaris 2.4 on Sun SPARC 20, with fvwm.  The Xsun application
takes 30-40 MB from the moment it starts.  This seems to be ureasonable memory
consumption.

Does anyone out there have any insight on this?

No insight, but I don't think it's fvwm.  I was running Xsun on a SS20 with
Sol2.4 using olwm the other day.  By the end of my session (4 hours) Xsun had
grown to 78M!!!  There must be a leak somewhere.

1. 2.4 Xsun high RSS memory consumption

We've noticed that sometimes the Solaris 2.4 Xsun gets huge.  Is this
an actual problem or is ps (and top and proctool) just reporting the
wrong thing?  I've heard that SX systems mmap the frame buffer in a
variety of ways and I think I see 24M (4 4M regions and 8 1M regions)
that could be attributed to that (in both SZ and RSS?).  The RSS sizes
below go well beyond that.  Is there any way to track down what is being
counted towards the RSS value?

Machine 1, SS20/50, SX, 64M, Solaris 2.4 no patches.  The RSS of 375212
seems unlikely on a 64M machine.
% /usr/ucb/ps l 3277
F   UID   PID  PPID CP PRI NI   SZ  RSS    WCHAN S TT        TIME COMMAND
 8  5398  3277  3276 80  59 2036968375212 tl_flow_ S console  13:19 /usr/openw

Machine 2, SS5/70, GX, 16M, Solaris 2.4, patches 101753-08 101879-01
101920-02 101922-08 101925-02 101933-01 101940-02 101945-27 101959-03

102216-01 102218-02 102292-01 102922-01.  In this case the RSS is 610420.
