Is it safe to remove SUNWcsr in Solaris 5.6?

Is it safe to remove SUNWcsr in Solaris 5.6?

Hello,

Here is the background information before I have my real question:

I am trying to upgrade public version Sendmail to Sun version Sendmail on
our Solaris 5.8 systems.  Here is what I did and the result is great:

a. remove SUNWsndmr and SUNWsndmu first ( since sendmail binaries were
changed already )
b. re-install above packages from CD
c. install Sun Sendmail patches 109326-10 and 110615-08

However, one of my server is Solaris 5.6 and here is the problem I found:

Sun Sendmail patch is 105395-08, which is related to SUNWcsr, SUNWcsu and
SUNWnisu packages.

SUNWcsr = Core Solaris Root
SUNWcsu = Core Solaris User

Since I am not sure if SUNWcsr and SUNWcsu is related to Solaris kernel or
not, I am not sure if it is safe to remove SUNWcsr/SUNWcsu and re-install
these two packages while the system is running.

Can anyone give me advice if it is safe to remove SUNWcsr and SUNWcsu in
run-level 6?

Thanks,

S.C.

It is not safe to remove SUNWcsr or SUNWcsu at all -- you'll find you lose
most of the system;-)  What happens if you just try applying the patch (not
that I'm claiming this will work though...)?

Run level 6 is a reboot.  Perhaps you were asking about run level S or 1?

However, if you want to find out what will be removed when you remove
the SUNWcsr and SUNWcsu packages, all you have to do is:

  grep 'SUNWcs[ru]' /var/sadm/install/contents

On my solaris 8 machine, that listed 2,257 files.  Including things
like /sbin/init and all the scripts in the /etc/rc?.d directories.
And many more critical things.  The 'Core' of Solaris would be all
important stuff, wouldn't it?

It looks to me like you definitely do not want to delete those
packages unless you want to re-install the operating system.

You should know that there was a security problem with sendmail discovered
just a few days ago.  There are new versions of the public sendmail available.
Sun will take from several weeks to a month to make patches available for
this.  Note also that switching from the public version Sendmail to Sun
Sendmail is not an upgrade, it is a downgrade.
