Solaris 9 SPARC: How small can you make / ???

Post by Dante Bel » Wed, 17 Aug 2005 10:16:49

My customer (an AIX expert) tells me that she can make the solaris /
partition less than 512 mb.  I've been working with Solaris since 1988 and
have never seen anyone do this, but I have on HPUX and AIX.  I think
she's mixing up /kernel with / ....

How small can one make / in S9 w/o
sym-links all over the place?

As small as you like as long as it
contains all the files needed for
booting and startup before other
file systems get mounted ;-)

Here's a Solaris 9 machine:

Filesystem            kbytes    used   avail capacity  Mounted on
/dev/dsk/c0t0d0s0     482455   79706  354504    19%    /
/dev/dsk/c0t0d0s6    4032142 2759614 1232207    70%    /usr
/dev/dsk/c0t0d0s4    4032142  342553 3649268     9%    /var
/dev/dsk/c0t0d0s5    4032142    4777 3987044     1%    /opt

I didn't do anything special to it, other than specifying those
partitions at install time.

Rather an open question, what other partitions are there, /usr, /var?

I suppose the intent of the original
poster was to move everything out of
/ that can be possibly moved out.

Otherwise what would be the point of
asking?

Does booting diskless count as zero?

On production servers with small root for resiliance,
you can comfortably fit root in 100Mb, and it doesn't
grow. This implies separating out /usr, /var, /opt and
all the customer's own data from the root filesystem.
/usr and /opt can then be made to mount read-only.

That's never necessary.

I cannot talk about S9, but for S11 (x86), a _complete_ /
FS is 44 MB if you omit the 64 bit binaries and 80 MB including
64 bit binaries.

You need to add the space needed for /boot and if you like to include
/var/sadm, you would need the related space.

1. Need help making port bidirectional on Sparc 10/30-Solaris 2.3

We have been struggling trying to make a port bidirectional for a
Practical Peripherals 9600 baud modem as well as one for a lan
connection.  We have a SUN Sparc 10/30 running Solaris 2.3.
We have discovered that we cannot use the
Serial Port Manager for this (when configured via the manager, ports
come up busy when we try to tip out) but rather must use the
older programs (one of the *adm programs; I am not involved
directly in this task).  We have been back and forth with
SUN about how to do this; it does not seem straightforward
to say the least.  This week we installed a brand new patch having
to do with bidirectionality but things are still not working.
Has someone done this successfully?

Thanks.
