Configuring On-Board NIC

Configuring On-Board NIC

Post by Scallic » Wed, 28 Jan 2004 22:06:41

Hello all,

I have an Ultra 1 workstation running Solaris 8. It has an on-board nic and
one in a slot. The NIC in the slot is hme0 and is functioning properly.
However, I cannot get the on-board nic to work. I typed "ifconfig plumb
le0"....but that says bad address. The on-board card worked when I had
Solaris 7 on this system. Any ideas? How do I get the on-board NIC to work?

Thanks,
Scallica

First, check and see if the system has seen any le devices...

# grep "\"le\"" /etc/path_to_inst

if you have one, it should look something like this...

then if so...

# ifconfig le0 plumb

and it should be plumbed... since you reversed the interface and the plumb
command places in your post, that might be your mistake.

IIRC the onboard nic is an hme on ultras. The le's are on earlier boxes.
Try ifconfig hme1 plumb and see what happens.

Not true, Ultra 1E and 2 have hme Ultra 1 has le
Easy way to tell the difference is to watch the onboard SCSI adapter, on
the 10mbit models iths the old type 50 pin narrow scsi and on the 100mbit
you have the 68 pin wide scsi, easy to spot, if you need to.

1. How do I use an on-board NIC?

I just got an el-cheap-o PC.  It seems to have everything build onto the
motherboard, including the NIC.  It works fine with Win98, but how can I get
Linux to see the NIC?  It's not any brand listed in the list of Linux NICs
supported by the kernel.  Do I need to use "ifconfig" and give the i/o
address, irq, hardware address, and stuff like that?

Thanks
