X-windows threaded newsreader for Solaris

Is there a threaded newsreader for X-windows out there somewhere?  I have trn,
which is nice but text-based, and xrn, which is nice but not threaded.  Is there
a good combination of the two out there somewhere?

Try slrn from space.mit.edu:/pub/davis/slrn.  It is text based but if you
pick up a color xterm such as rxvt, or run it using a color terminal such as
ms-kermit, etc... then it may be all you need.  Here is some more info:

  * True referenced-based threading
  * Draws a colored thread tree using line drawing characters
  * Multiple server support
  * Multiple windows
     - Header summary window showing threads
     - Article window
  * Customizable
     - Keybindings
     - Colors
         For example, the default colors, say, using a color xterm such as
         rxvt, shows the top status bar in blue on white, the author's name
         in the header summary window as magenta on white, the thread tree
         as red lines connecting subject titles, the window status lines
         appear as yellow on blue, the article headers in the article window
         are cyan on white, the quoted text appears as red on white, and
         the body of the article appears as blue on white.
     - Server -> newsrc mappings
  * Smart screen updating
  * Online help which is also customizable
  * Automatic reconnect if server drops connection
  * Fast on slow modem connections.  It does not read the whole active file
     like many other newsreaders.
  * Compile with TERM support under Linux

I discovered just today that mosaic 2.6 includes one, although I havn't done
anything with it yet. (Version 2.4 which I had before didn't.)

Netscape 1.0 & 1.1 also have a threaded newsreader

Try Netscape, it has a nice graphical newsreader with
most of the common features of trn etc.

I've been using xvnews.  It works pretty nicely.

You can find it on a bunch of ftp sites.  Let me know if you need help getting it.

Jeff

xvnews is nice but not threaded unless there's a new version I don't
know about.

XEmacs Version 19.12 has a very nice integrated threaded newsreader (and an
integrated WWW viewer).  For information about XEmacs see

Netscape doesn't support Kill files or macros, does it?

There's a program called knews that's X-based, but it uses POSIX.
The README:

Description:
------------

Knews is a threaded newsreader with an X Window interface that
uses NNTP to get news. It displays the threads in a graphical tree.
For more information read the man page e.g. with 'nroff -man knews.man'.

Requirements:
-------------

To compile it you need an ANSI C compiler and X11R5 or R6.
The distribution includes a POSIX.2 regular expression package
in case your system doesn't have it. (GNU regex is ok.)

For info on how to compile, se the file INSTALL.

Where to get it:
----------------

You can get the latest version at
http://www.matematik.su.se/users/kjj/knews.html

Platforms:
----------

Knews has been developed and tested on the following platforms:

Linux 1.2.1 i586  with X11R6
OSF1 V2.0 alpha   with X11R5
SunOS 4.1.3 sun4m with X11R6 and X11R5

I have not been able to test it with X11R4, and I would be interested to
know what changes are necessary.

You should try out Knews, which was announced in this group a few days ago.

It's a new threaded X newsreader, and isn't half bad.  I'm using it right now.
It needs some work, to be sure, but it is quite usable.

Here's the README file:
(It also compiles and runs under AIX and HP-UX, not sure about Solaris)

Don't forget - it's also a kitchen sink and, if you act now, you can extend
it to mow your lawn :-)
Sorry, couldn't resist.  I've got my 'bash emacs' hat on today :-)

1. X-windows in Windows 95 and type writers in X-windows

Hello!

I have 3 questions about X-windows:

Is there a good graphical bases typewriter (not editor) in which
i can write and layout text in x-windows, without using a bunch
of codes as in e.g. latech.

Is it possible to make a telnet like connection in a MS windows
based PC to a unix machine which is capable to run the X-windows
system. So i could use for example Xmaple when I am sitting home
where i dont have unix, but I do have a fast pc and internet.

Is there a special X-windows newsgroup?

Please e-mail me because i cant read the newsgroups so often.

thanks
