Netscape Enterprise SlowDown

Netscape Enterprise SlowDown

Post by Noel Cho » Sat, 15 Feb 1997 04:00:00

I am in the process of configuring a Solaris 2.5.1 (Enterprise 2 server/256MB
memory) machine as a Web server.

I have found that the Netscape Enterprise 2.01 server  hangs several per day
under a relatively light load ( average 1000 hits/day ).  The hang goes away
if the httpd daemon is "HUP'ed".  I am running the Apache Web server in
parallel.  While the Netscape server is hung, the Apache has no problems.
I have not found any serious problems with the Apache server.

Has anyone else experienced this problem with Netscape Enterprise?

Is there a fix?

Please respond by E-mail,  I will summarize on this NG.  (Thanks in advance.)

Regards,

Noel

PS: The 2.5.1 Recommended_Patches have been installed

Re: Netscape Enterprise Slowdown/hang on SPARC Sol 2.5.1
--------------------------------------------------------

A few weeks ago I posted a query concerning the Netscape
Enterprise 2.01 Web Server on a Solaris 2.5.1 SPARC machine.

I found that the Netscape Web server (httpd)  would cease
to respond to all requests several times per day.  These
freezes would last for several minutes at times and at other
times the freeze would exceed 10 minutes.  At that point, I
would send a HUP signal to the ns-httpd daemon and it would
be instantly resuscitated.  The fix for this problem is Kernel
Patch 103640-05

( Note that I had already turned off DNS lookups since John Muscat and
others had forewarned me about this problem )

Sub-sequent to applying this patch, the performance of the server
improved significantly.  However, I found the server to be
still quite slow considering the relatively light load that
the machine was under ( <2000 hits/day ).  Since I expected to
see a load of 50,000 - 100,000 hits/day when the system  is
placed into full production, I was quite concerned.  As it turned
out, I believe that the problem was caused by an excessive amount
of network traffic on the sub-net.  The network has been re-configured
and now, the performance of the web server software is quite
acceptable.

Thanks to all who responded.
