Solaris 2.5 x86 (Desktop vs. Server)

Post by Joseph Blacket » Wed, 07 Feb 1996 04:00:00

I recently ordered a copy of Solaris 2.5 for my pentium. I was told by
a SunExpress person that the ONLY difference between their server and
desktop package was the number of users supported. I later spoke to
another rep who said NIS was also missing.

Can anyone else tell me what other functionality I have foresaken.
I don't want to install it and spend the next few months finding stuff
missing. Since I will be seriously banging the machine and comparing
it with results found on my sparc, any and all info would be
greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
Joe

The NIS server stuff (nskit 1.2) is on another CD, not on de solaris CD.
But I don't know whether that other cd is included in the client package or
not.
The client sofwtare is included though. On a client you can have 2 users
max *legally*, though as far as i know the system does not enforce the
limit.

In the Solaris Desktop, you get two CDROMs:

Solaris 2.5
Desktop 1.0, which contains
    CDE 1.0.1
    Wabi 2.1

In the WG server lite you also get:
Admin Suite 1.0 (a souped-up version of admintool). The admintool
in the base OS has been reduced in functionality from 2.4.
NISkit, which lets you still run as a NIS server

In the WG server, you also get:
   Solstice DiskSuite 4.0 - software controlled RAID 0, 1, 2, 5, and a nifty GUI
Solstice Backup 4.1 - aka Legato Networker
   System Administrator's answerbook.

The WG server ans server lite also have more documentation. The desktop
weighs 4lbs, the WG server, 7 1/2 lbs. (x86)

1. FS: Solaris 2.5 Desktop (CDE) and/or Solaris 2.5 Server Packages for x86 desktops

 Hi All,

Just wanted to pass on some excellent deals on Solaris 2.5.1 software with
the WABI user interface for x86 machines. The WABI allows you to run many
Windows 3.1 applications on a UNIX box, giving you the best of both worlds.
Imagine, running MS OFFICE components like, MS Word for Windows, Excel,
Powerpoint, and interfacing with the functionality of UNIX at the same time.

For a limited time, John Cristy, at Executive Tools, Inc.,
is offering:

Solaris 2.5.1 User Desktop package for $175.00
Solaris 2.5.1 Application Server package for $395.00

Ref URL http://www.etools.com for full information and additional products.

They also have a student special (99.00 + shipping)(yes, you read that
right, Solaris 2.5.1 user desktop for $99.00).

Mention my name, Bob Fahey, and he will throw in the Java Workshop for
$85.00. Mention my name anyway, as he wants to know what the response is to
this.
If asked where you heard this, tell them not just the web, but the Newsgroup
you read it on.  Thanks.

The Executive Tools web site URL http://www.etools.com also has some
excellent links to other Solaris and Sun information pages.

Executive Tools is not associated with this posting, so, if you have any

 replies, good or bad!
