cross-wire cable can stack switches?

Post by joeh » Thu, 08 Jul 1999 04:00:00

If i don't have a 50-pin cable to stack switches, can i do so by using a
cross-over cable
from port to port?   (i just want to know if that's possible as a
backup)
thanks

A CAT-5 crossover will work from port to port.  Also some hubs/switches
will have one switchable  MDI/MDI-x port.  If you don't want to
buy/make a crossover, simple use a straight-thru and set the port on
one end to MDI (normal is MDI-X).

Perhaps, but be careful, many switches have per-port limits on the
number of MAC addresses (some as low as 1 to 4 MACs).  If you connect
to many devices together this way, the port may stop switching and
pass everything out that port, resulting in a dramatic loss of
performance.  You can improve things if you chain them in a tree
fashion, rather than hook them serially together.

I'd test out the configuration even if you want it just for backup
purposes.
