man scrolls off the screen

man scrolls off the screen

Post by Randy Galbrait » Thu, 24 Dec 1998 04:00:00

Whenever I do "man something" the manual page scrolls off the screen.
I'm using Reflection X, xterm, and Solaris.  Is there anyway to address
this?

Thanks in advance.

I was tempted to reply "see man stty" but that seemed a bit cruel...

use `stty` to review tty settings.  sounds like "rows" is too
large for your xterm.  use 'stty rows 30' or an appropriate value
to adjust to your xterm size (1 row = line)

Your TERM setting is probably the "xsun", but until you figure out
a successful tty setting, try setting the TERM and TERMCAP values
to vt100.  This has been widely successful for us.

setenv TERM vt100
setenv TERMCAP vt100

now that you can use man, try "man stty".

Richard,

Thanks for going beyond "man stty" -- although, I would have appreciated that as
well! :-)

have you tried resetting the TERM variable? usually setenv TERM vt100 works,
but you may be using something odd.

eval `/usr/openwin/bin/resize`

Opinions expressed herein are my own and may not represent those of my employer.

1. Installing Debian - menus scroll off the screen

I'm trying to install Debian for a small server machine.  It's an old PC,
and has some trouble booting from the CD (I downloaded and burned the Sarge
net install CD), so I made a floppy with the net installation disk
(net-1440.img from the CD image).  This boots fine, finds my network card,
sets up the card (I have an ADSL connection, with a firewall/router
handling DHCP, so network setup is easy).

Then come the longer menus - choose a mirror, giving me a list of 52 choices
on a screen 24 lines high.  Surely there must be some way I can see the
rest of the menu?  Luckily, on this menu my choice (Norway) is in the
bottom half, but on other menus later on (such as the language), the choice
is off the screen.

Is there some simple way to get around this, so that I can scroll back
through the choices, or so that I can change the screen text size so that
the complete menu fits on the screen?  Failing that, is there a way to view
the lists on another machine (I have gentoo installed on this machine, but
the small server is a P200, and not really suited to gentoo!) ?

Or is there another floppy disk image or two that I can use to get a network
install going with some other installer interface (such as curses - I'm not
really looking for an X-based installer, since I don't want X in the final
setup)?
