can NIS and NIS+ share maps?

Post by Eric Hendrickso » Thu, 17 Oct 1996 04:00:00

Hello, we have a network of 100 or so machines, almost all Suns, but a
few are SGIs.  We are considering migrating to NIS+, for the security
and performance benefits.  By that I mean the NIS+ feature where
clients can have multiple masters and are therefore not hosed when
their master goes down, they can just use another one.  However, are
there any performance hits from NIS+ vs. NIS?

My main question though, is that since the SGIs are NIS only, if we
went to NIS+ we would have to run the NIS+ master(s) in YP
compatibility mode, which I understand would negate most or all of the
security benefits, OR we could have a separate NIS group, containing
*just* the SGIs.  However, I would still need to be able to share
files, particularly home directories, via the automounter, between the
NIS group and the NIS+ group.  Can I share the automounter maps
between an NIS master and an NIS+ master?

I would appreciate any pointers!  I hope I am making sense....  :)

Thanks a bunch,

Try `stty 0' -- it works much better.

can NIS and NIS+ share maps?

We have a simliar situation in that we have a NIS domain for SunOS and
a NIS+ domain for Solaris 2.x machines.  Hourly we transfer the maps
(password, adjunct, group) to keep the two in sync.  The rest of the
maps are updated when the map changes.

By running NIS+ in yp compat mode you do loose some/alot of the
security aspects of NIS+.  There may be ways around some of them
though NIS+ groups, etc....

If it doesn't do what you want, subclass and override.

1. Need suggestions for passwd map when sharing NIS maps in multiple domains.

I have a need to create some NIS maps and modify other existing
maps. Unfortunately, political realities prevent me from modifying/adding to
the current NIS infrastructure. However, I do have the ability to create an
entirely new domain.

What I would like to do is be a slave server with respect to the all maps
except automount and netgroup maps.

The question is: How do I pass back passwd changes? I don't have super-user
remote execution ability on the NIS master. I think I am out of luck but I am
hoping someone else has had to deal with this and might have some ideas that I
can use.

Thanks in advance,
