Install Netscape 6.01 A on Solaris (Sun OS 5.6)

Post by Atlantis We » Sun, 01 Jul 2001 17:53:10

HI:

I download the Netscape 6.01A for Solaris 7 and 8
" XPInstall version "( becaue I am not the root/admin)

I got the following error message:

Checking for required patches ...

ld.so.1: ./netscape-installer-bin: fatal: librt.so.1: open failed:
No such file or directory
Killed

I can find the ld.so.1and  librt.so.1 in the "/usr/lib",
so
1. I copy them into the netscape-installer directory -> FAIL !!
2. I add /usr/lib into LD_LIBRARY_PATH -> FAIL !!

can anyone who please help me?

Netscape 6.x is Solaris 7/8 only.
Go to http://www.mozilla.org/ - Mozilla is nearly the same as Netscape
6.x but they have binaries for Solaris 2.6, too...

http://www.mozilla.org/releases/ only mentions Solaris 8,
which they incorrectly call "Solaris 2.8"

in http://www.mozilla.org/releases/ I see the
tar.gz format for sparc Solaris 2.8 (11.2 MB)
but... it still has the SAME problem...

ld.so.1: ./mozilla-bin: fatal: librt.so.1: open failed: No such file
or directoy
Killed

althought it "IS" in the /usr/lib,
and I've
1. copy these files into the SAME mozilla's directory
2. add them intoLD_LIBRARY_PATH
but I just can't solve it.

I am too stupid to use Netscape... it's all my fault...
I hate myself...

You CANNOT use the version compiled for Solaris 8 on Solaris 2.6.
It is compiled to use features of the newer operating system that
are not present on the old one.

That are contributed "milestone" packages. Someone hacks-up a binary
tarball and sends it to Mozilla.org ...
See ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla/nightly/ for a Solaris 2.6 binary
(for example:
ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla/nightly/2001-06-30-21-trunk/mozilla...)
from daily source (Mozilla.org builds _daily_ a new binary from current
source for testing...).

Mozilla5 is very portable... it should even work on Solaris 2.4...
(assuming Xsun does not crash =:-)

well, the same error:
ld.so.1: ./mozilla-bin: fatal: libgtk-1.2.so.0: open failed: No such
file or diy
Killed

thanks for all the friends.

I believe that I have to wait till the root/admin upgrade OS,
and there is no hope for this year...

No, that's not the same error you described earlier.  That error means
that you don't have GTK+ (libgtk) installed or that mozilla can't find
it.  That's different than not having librt.  (librt should be in
/usr/lib; it comes with Solaris.)

You may be able to get it working by going to http://www.gtk.org/
to download the GTK+ toolkit, compiling it, and installing
it somewhere that mozilla can find.

Also, it is probably best if you do something like "ldd mozilla.bin" to
see what libraries mozilla.bin needs in order to run, and whether these
needs are satisfied.  You may find that all it needs is GTK+, or you
may find that there are lots of other things it needs as well.

Hope that helps.

In fact Mozilla does not need GDK/GTK+ libs... just compile the source
with "./configure --enable-toolkit=xlib; gmake" and you do not need
those libraries...

nice tip. thanks Roland.

The bad news is, after running a 3 hour compile on my 400mhz computer
(without knowing that tip),  I finally got a binary for mozilla0.9.2...
and it coredumped.
blah.

Quality software.

I'll try to see what happens with the xlib stuff.

doesnt seem that way to me, with 0.9.2
mind you, this was after a "make distclean; rm config.cache", not
a pure extract. But still...

Aw... stacktrace ?

=:-)

Maybe it's a known bug... recommendend patches ? "Right version" of
GDK/GTK+ libraries ? Xsun patch (to satisfy "needs" of GDK/GTK+) ?

Mozilla.org has a "bug report interface" - take a look at
http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/ ... :-)

Erm... yes... you do not need the GDK/GTK+ libraries... but you still
need the IDL library... :-)

http://www.mozilla.org/build/unix-details.html has detailed build
instructions (simple ignore GDK/GTK+ :-)
http://www.mozilla.org/unix/solaris-build.html covers some details of
building the Zilla on Solaris.

Solaris 7 SPARC  0.9.2 milestone build binaries on demand... :-)
If someone is willing to give me an account (ssh2 access, 3GB diskspace,
installed gmake/Sun Workshop 6 Update 1 or 2EA2/etc. (see links above))
on a S2.5.1/2.6 box I can try to hack-up a build for that platform,
too... :-))
