Turn on 64 bits in Sol 7... how to?

Post by Jay G. Sco » Sat, 16 Jan 1999 04:00:00

How do I know which of my machines will play 64 bit games
properly?  I tried Sun's web page, didn't make much progress.

Also, I know from a reliable source that to turn on
64 bit Solaris 7 you need to set up a file named
boot.conf, IIRC.  Well, I can't find any documentation
on that at all.  I need to try 64 bit stuff, but
I've confirmed that all my Sol 7 test machines are living
in a 32 bit world (isainfo output).

How do I do these things?

Thanks to Wong and Myers for pointing me to the right
places.

Answer:  I don't.  None of my machines are sun4u
architecture.  As far as I can tell, the only mention
in the H/W platform guide appears in sections intended
for sun4u readers--but there's a note there about
the sun4d, sun4m, and sun4c being unable to run 64 bit mode.

It's in the bit about whether your PROM needs updating.

Ultra based systems, preferrably with processors faster than 200MHz.

(see boot(1m) about UltraSPARC-I notes)

man boot(1m) tells you what to do.

You also need to have all teh 64 bit packages installed.

E.g., you need this:

/platform/sun4u/kernel/sparcv9/unix is in package SUNWcarx
system      SUNWcarx       Core Architecture, (Root) (64-bit)

I have upgraded Solaris 7 on a Ultra-2 SPARC (sun4u) but after
the upgrade, there was no Flash Update software available in the
directory mentioned in the documentation.

From SunSolve, I got the update and now the Ultra-2 gives me:

# prtconf -V
OBP 3.11.2 1997/12/05 10:25

So that looks alright. However, psrinfo -v gives me:

# psrinfo -v
Status of processor 0 as of: 01/19/99 01:07:22
  Processor has been on-line since 01/18/99 19:10:55.
The sparcv9 processor operates at 168 MHz,
and has a sparcv9 floating point processor.
Status of processor 1 as of: 01/19/99 01:07:22
  Processor has been on-line since 01/18/99 19:10:58.
The sparcv9 processor operates at 168 MHz,
and has a sparcv9 floating point processor.

Nevertheless, isalist -v still gives me:
# isalist -v
sparcv8plus+vis sparcv8plus sparcv8 sparcv8-fsmuld sparcv7 sparc

It looks like the 64bit packages are not installed at all. I can
not find the kernel for instance.

Can I installed the 64bit packages afterwards and which packages
do I need from the Solaris 7 CD to have full 64bit support?

Kind regards,

Marcel Knol

These are SPARC processors that won't boot a 64 bit kernel by default.

See boot(1m) on how to rectify that.

1. 64 bit Unix (esp. 64 bit IO)

Hi

we are planning to install a large db & file server this year.
All the OS tends to go in the 64 bit direction, so it would
be nice to know a bit what's available today
(or the near future).

I'd be very pleased if you could provide me with some information
about the major plattforms
(AIX,Solaris,HP-UX,IRIX,Digital Unix,SCO, ...
and WinNT <hope this is not blasphemy :-) >

Filesystem Type (log based or not, ...)
Max. FilesystemSize
Max. FileSize
Max. Virtual Memory Size
True 64-bit (or IO only)

Many thanks
and I'll summarize if there is an interest.
